Oscar nominated Shrek screenwriter Ted Elliott writes about a dispute over the writing credits on Shrek 2 in a discussion forum on WordPlay, Elliott's and writing partner Terry Rossio's website. (Note: Andrew Adamson is the director of both Shrek movies).

The credits include the statement "Story by Andrew Adamson." More than half of the story elements in the movie were created by Terry and me. This is the second time director Adamson has attempted to claim writing credit for the work of other people.

The first time, on SHREK, he failed; this time, he succeeded. Determining writing credit on animated movies from DreamWorks is the responsibility of Jeffrey Katzenberg.

I would advise any writers contemplating working for DreamWorks animation in the future to insist that their contracts conform to the WGA Minimum Basic Agreement. If they don't, turn down the job.

I would advise any writers considering working with Adamson in the future: do not.

Watch out, these credit disputes always get ugly. There could be green blood splattered all over Jeffrey Katzenberg by the time this is settled. But maybe the miniature DreamWorks head can use some of the first Shrek's $267 million domestic gross to get the stains out.
