A reader writes: "Your thoughts please on the Sophia Coppola profile in NY Times mag. Am I bitter or is the cool circle really fucking annoying? And, the Mark Jacobs quote: 'I am not a girl, nor will I ever be one.... ' Or something of the sort (I threw the magazine away in disgust)."

Why, I'm glad you asked, gentle yet easily frustrated reader. In fact, my thoughts are many:
· I'm completely flabbergasted and annoyed by the constant discussion of her gender in the article. Over and over we're told that what she does and how she does it is "like a woman." She is called "the most original and promising young female filmmaker in America." I hadn't realized the category had gender-specific competitions — like the shotput or the 100 meter dash.
· It made me intensely jealous at times. Is it uncool of me to admit how much I would have liked to grown up with wealthy, famous, well-regarded parents!? Profile articles like this are always engineered to induce a kind of lust for access and dynasty — this is probably also unfair to Ms. Coppola. It's probably also unfair to me and the trailer I grew up in.
· It made me totally want to see her movie. I think it's gonna be pretty bitchin' — for a girly flick.
