This is a lovely story of an unreasonable landlord, a mysterious beauty queen, and the changing times downtown. A reader writes: "I've walked by this storefront hundreds of times over the years. It's changed owners and names but one thing that hasn't changed is the oversized, full color, blowup of 'Miss New York.'

"I finally decided to stop into the store to find out what the deal is with the photo. The poor girl working the store laughed and told me the story that she's had to tell countless times: the owner of the building who rents out the store front has it in the rental clause that this photo stay exactly where it is, they've tried covering it up and he came by and had them put it back just the way it is. The owner of the building had a contest about 10 years ago and this girl won, he likes the photo and wants it just where it is. If you've walked down Mulberry street no doubt you've seen this too. The photo is showing its age and looks a bit rugged. The store owners H-A-T-E this photo but can't do anything about it."

Isn't there something we could do for these poor long-suffering tenants? Although it would be wrong, couldn't we hold the photograph of 'Miss New York' hostage and demand the landlord retire her or else her pretty face will get an acid bath? I mean, this is the Lower East Side after all.
