The Real Fallout From Deep Throat
Graydon Carter spilled a few of the beans about how the Deep Throat/Mark Felt deal was handled in the UK Guardian, but the long sordid tale is really broken by Tom Scocca and Sheelah Kolhatkar in this week's New York Observer.
The story is an exhaustive tick-tock of what went down, with heroes and villians, geniuses and incompetents and, most notably, winners and losers. For all the talk about how Bob Woodward (and tiny sidekick Carl Bernstein) were scooped by Vanity Fair, they stand to benefit the most from the unmasking of Deep Throat, thanks to a quickie book out next month. As for the Felts — and their beleaguered agent David Kuhn — they could be S.O.L., thanks to some less-than-savvy maneuvering. It's a must-read.—WL
