In this edition: Linda Evangelista lights up inside, Anderson Cooper, Chloe Sevigny, Michael Pitt at McDonalds, Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts, Chelsea Clinton, Maura Tierney, Molly Shannon, Cuba Gooding Junior, Martha Stewart, Paris and Paris, Tara Reid being obnoxious, Bob Saget, Scarlett Johansson, Ed Norton, Caroline Rhea, Ellen Barkin, Elvis Costello, Jim Jarmush, Martin Scorsese, Steve Van Zant, Pattie Smith, Ric Ocasek, Jason Patric, Leonardo DiCaprio, David Schwimmer, Susan Sarandon, Elijah Wood, David Lauren and Lauren Bush, Geraldo Rivera, Tony Danza, the FIRST Becky from Roseanne, Terry Richardson, Newman from Seinfeld, David Alan Grier, and Hahhvard boy Nick McDonell.
I didn't think that this was worthy, but after watching America's Next Top Model and reading about how fat Heath Ledger's girlfriend is for the 8th time in two days, I changed my mind. Saw fucking Linda Evangelista Saturday night at Paloma, the new Greenpoint hotspot. It was a Katrina benefit. No one else recognized her. But don't worry, being a huge faggot who watches the Freedom '90 video on repeat every morning before I go to work, I was on the case. She was with a slightly older, European looking gentleman who appeared to be rich. (Meaning he was wearing all-black and had a really shiny watch) She was also sitting with a dumpy, fat old blonde woman. Which I hope was the Twig, after watching ANTM, but probably wasn't. In the final analysis, Linda looked especially fab juxtaposed against a huge, fat old blonde woman. Unfortunately, she did not snort coke off the table. Nor did she demand to be paid $10,000 for getting out of bed to appear at a Hurricane Katrina benefit. BUT, she was the first to start smoking inside. The cocktail waiter had an immediate meeting with her, and apparently got served. He left very sheepish looking. Apparently, I now have to cross the bridge to see faded supermodels. And I don't even get to see them do coke. At least we have camera phones.
I never really understood the obsession with Anderson Cooper until 9/19 at around 7am in line for security at LaGuardia. After reading the New York mag article about him I figured he was still down south but this was definitely the Coop. He had on a blue t-shirt and jeans, no news entourage and just carried a small bag with him. We both got felt up and triple checked at security so I thought we could maybe bond after that but I chickened out. He wandered around the magazine stand and eventually disappeared. He's just got that somethin' somethin' that makes you want to stay close to him...
On Friday 9/16, saw Chloe Sevigny at Fizz for the A.R.E. Weapons record release party. My friend asked her where the after party was and she politely said she didn t know, that she didn t really go to any parties (Whatev Chloe!). Either way, she looked fabulous and was very nice.
Had a late nite Mac-Attack and sat in a booth behind Michael Pitt. He was looking pretty greasy, eating greasy food with two greasy girls. My friend was grilling him with questions, and when he started talking to him about music, he asked him what kind of guitar he played, and M. Pitt didn t seem to know. One of the greasy girls gave us a cd of his band. My friend was pretty much making fun of him to his face and he seemed to
be kind of embarrassed but still mumbled something along the lines of nice talking to you when he left.
Are Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts now an item? [Ed: YES. Hello, welcome to JUNE!] I am not really up on my US Weekly gossip, but you d think that I would have heard about them. I saw the two walking last Friday (09/16/05) afternoon carrying dry cleaning. That, to me, is a very couple-y thing to do. Also Liev is quite big (not fat) and Naomi, itty bitty.
Tuesday 9/20 saw Chelsea Clinton, looking very very corporate (Ann Taylor-ish pantsuit, blue blouse), I believe lagging a laptop case west down 53rd towards Madison with an entourage of MorganStanley/financial-types. She looked like she just came from some merger meeting ... Girl is not as ugly as always appears in print, somewhat attractive even. No Ian with her.
On Sunday afternoon Maura Tierney walking down 6th Avenue in front of Bar Six with a cute guy we didn't recognize. Dark glasses (it WAS sunny...) a black T, jeans and a HEINOUS beige purse (Jacob-esque but NOT) slug over her shoulder. She's tiny with beautiful, delicate features and looks very young in person.
About 1pm today SUPERSTAR Molly Shannon jogging down Washington Street in front of Jane Street, zoning out to her iPod. She looked like a soccer mom with her page boy hair cut and small earrings. Navy shorts, white T, a pained expression on her face despite the fact that she wasn't exactly burning up the sidewalk.
Cuba Gooding Jr. was in meatpacking district at around 6 pm—saw him go into The Diner on 9th Ave. with a male friend. Casually dressed in green and white baseball jersey, jeans. Looked around 5 ft. 10 or so, fit, good posture, moderate facial hair. Confident stride. Something about the jawline—he was instantly recognizable despite motorcycle-style sunglasses that shaded his eyes. I've never thought he was handsome, but having seen him on the street, sans pumped-up J. Maguire muscles, I totally would've given him a lurid wink. I was on the bus watching all this BTW. Good thing, the bus. You can gawk openly at fellow New Yorkers.
Was waiting in my dentist's waiting room yesterday (9/20) when who should walk in for an appointment but Martha Stewart! She looked great - thinner than I thought. She asked if there were any Harper's Bazaar magazines and shortly after that was wisked upstairs.
Last night (9/20) at about 10 to midnight saw Paris Hilton and her fianc Paris Latsis strolling down Madison Avenue in the 60's. The streets were dark and empty and they were walking alone, holding hands and chatting — looked like any other Upper East Side, well-dressed couple, walking home from dinner. Paris the man is definitely cute after all.
Ciprianis on Sunday made for some great people watching. Tara Reid and her entourage were among the rudest. I recognized some of her Jerseyite friends from Taradise, just as loud, stupid and obnoxious in person as they are on the show. She pulled the "I'm famous, give me a table outside" routine while her friends made every effort to see and be seen. Girlfriend needs to slow down on the booze and start working out as the cellulite on her thighs was hardly befitting a "Hollywood starlet." Not to mention her horrible addiction to black eyeliner. D class all the way.
Saw Bob Saget outside of the 92nd street Y last night around 7ish (9/20)..chatting with a man and a woman. It seemed as if Bob may have been giving a lecture that night. Is he chatting about his dirrrty joke telling in the Aristocrats?
9/21/05 - I saw Scarlett Johansson today at lunch time on the corner of Duane and Hudson. If I didn't have such an eagle eye I wouldn't have noticed her due to her blond hair being tucked up in a black beanie style hat. She was also wearing big, dark sunglasses with a white T-shirt that read "new sensations" on the back along with flowy capris - not a fan of these usually but they looked good on her and she looked really good in person! She was waiting for a call to connect on her cell phone. I'm jealous of her lips.
Edward Norton in a baseball cap on a cell phone on Christopher St. What's he been doing lately...besides talking on a cell phone on Christopher St.??
9/20 - Leaving our design office with a couple of friends, saw Caroline Rhea walking on 43rd near 6th. She's slimmer and taller than you'd think. At first we thought she was one of our buyers catching us ducking out early and we tried to avoid her. She had her blond hair piled on top of her hair just like a buyer. Then I recognized her real breasts.
Last night, 9/19 stood behind a very hot Ellen Barkin at the premiere of the new Martin Scorsese documentary on Bob Dylan.... it was incredible by the way. She was super thin, gorgeous, immaculately groomed, and of course dripping in huge but tasteful bling. Looked youngish and dressed hip. Also saw Elvis Costello, Jim Jarmush who is very very hot.. had no idea... a happy looking Steve van Zant, dressed in a silky half unbuttoned tie-dyed tunic (hey it works for him!). He and Jim were separately working the room and seemed to know everyone. Of course Martin Scorsese. Bob Saget! At the after party saw Chris Noth who was very grey but also very tall and handsome, not fat. He was wearing the most horrific bright yellow button down that had big black circles all
over it. Pattie Smith, Ric Ocasek, Jason Patric looking dapper. Oh, and Leonardo DiCaprio in the corner hiding.
Apparently the season isn't quite dead yet despite this late date, as I just spotted Sir Paul McCartney, the sinewy-armed missus, and the blonde, cherubic little one on Main St. in Amagansett, all piling into a green Ford Bronco. For the less famous of the two, Heather sure does look around suspiciously a lot as if in fear of a paparazzo jumping out from a nearby antique shop or farmer's market or something.
I spotted David Schwimmer at Magnolia Bakery on 9/19 wearing a baseball cap pulled way down so that no one would recognize him. I doubted the legitimacy of my sighting until he opened his mouth and started talking like Ross. He seemed extremely self conscious and I am sure thought everyone around him had recognized him but I don't think anyone around him recognized him - apparently he hasn't gotten the memo that we've all gotten over Friends. He bought a few cupcakes and paid for them with a
$50 bill.
Friday - I saw the beautiful and very petite Susan Sarandon at Madison Square Park bringing her son to get a burger at the Shake Shack. I heard that voice behind me and knew it was the most beautiful of the Eastwick Witches.
Saw Elijah Wood this weekend at Other Music on 4th Street. He was wearing a concert T-shirt from 1983 and was buying a stack of 25 or so CDs. Beside him was a bouncerishly burly man with a shaved head, with whom Elijah, burnishing his indie-cred, was carpet-bombing band names with reckless abandon. He appeared to be very excited about the new Witchcraft album. Store shoppers strained to keep their studied cool, pretending to blithely ignore the little guy. He was definitely the loudest dude in the place
At the CMJ KT Tunstall/Tom McRae/Cary Brothers/Joshua Radin show at the Living Room on Friday (9/16) night, David Lauren (in one of those hideously conspicuous oversized Polo-logo shirts) and a very blonde Lauren Bush turned up for the tail-end of Joshua Radin s set. I went to college with him and considered saying hi, but no. I hate myself for even reporting this as a Gawker Stalk.
Saw Geraldo Rivera 9/20 shortly after 6 p.m. as I was coming out of my office (NewsCorp bldg) headed down 47th street, between 6th and 7th. I assume that's where he was headed. He was looking rather smug but wore a perfectly pressed navy suit. Gave me quite the 'holier than thou'look when our eyes met and I realized who he was. Give me a BREAK!
Last night while dining al fresco at the San Gennarro we heard wild shrieking from the next table. Middle aged women that most likely just stepped off the 6:18 from Merrick starting waving their hands and yelling "Tony! Tony! Woohooooo!" Some of us turned around to behold Tony Danza, smiling wide and followed single-file by a cameraman, assistant types and some other minions. He is short and very cosmetically enhanced. It was as anti-climactic as it sounds.
I totally saw Becky from Roseanne on the F train last week. (IMDB tells me her real name is Alicia Goranson... It also tells me that she was Becky #1, in a series of two. Does that make this the lamest GS ever?) p.s. She was all student-y with a 3-ring binder and sneakers, and she got off at Smith and 9th.
Somehow stumbled into the VIP section and almost sat on Terry Richardson. I m sure he wouldn t have minded.
Sunday 9/18 saw Norman Reedus and his son walking hand in hand in SoHo. The child was adorable and his father looked gorgeous and was literally glowing. The little boy s mother, Helena Christensen, was unfortunately nowhere to be seen.
Walking home from work, ran squarely into the set of Devil Wears Prada ; no Anne Hathaway or Meryl Streep sightings, but on the block between the set and my home, i did run into **drum roll** Newman from Seinfeld. i don't really know where to go with that, but it does remind me of the delightful irony that is juxtaposition.
Not sure he's even really a celebrity anymore but last night David Alan Grier of "In Living Color" fame showed up at The Jewish Museum's opening of their new exhibit /The Jewish Identity Project/. Arriving as some girl's guest he was pretty tall, wearing jeans and a baseball cap, hanging behind his friend most of the time. I have a feeling that most of the crowd there had no clue who he was, but he did give an autograph to the Director of Security.
Spotted young "novelist" Nick McDonell on us airways flight 2120 from New York to Boston. This was on Monday morning. he was impeccably dressed for a college kid and spent most of the flight napping. I smirked the whole time at the thought of a recent
letter to the editor (written by a princeton student) in new york magazine calling him nothing "more than a second-rate chronicler of urban ennui." nobody else, not even Marty Beckerman, could have dissed mcdonell in a such a swift sentence.
