12/16 Shopping for last minute gifts at the woman's Banana Republic in Soho, when I spotted a familiar face. Sporting a knitted hat with way too big for NYC gold hoops was none other than Jessica Alba. She was with her boyfriend? The girl can do much better. Being a true new yorker, I ignored her completely. But the boyfriend caught me looking at her and gave me a dirty look. What an ass.
Was walking down Prince Street (12/17) and saw a ridiculous amount of cameras flashing toward a stall by the Apple Store. Got closer and saw a rough-looking Debra Messing casually shopping. Most people kept on asking who she actually was while one woman complained that she didn't know what the fuss was about as she could see her on TV if she wanted instead.
Saw gwen stefani and gavin rossdale at soho house on friday night (12.17). they both looked good. especially gwen. gavin was dressed down in a north face jacket and knit watchcap. I wonder what it's like being mr stefani. they took a picture with their driver and caused a bit of commotion on the sidewalk. a pedestrian doubled back to take a cell phone picture but he was too slow and missed the shot. my friends had just been raving about her concert so it was odd to see her a hour later.
This afternoon while I was shopping at M&J trimmings I nearly tripped over Sarah Jessica Parker. She was there buying lots of ribbon "to wrap presents" as she explained sweetly to the lady helping her with her purchase. She was dressed very casual chic in light blue jeans, amazing grey suede boots and a short orangey down jacket. She was really sweet
George Clooney was super-cute tonite lecturing about "Good Night and Good Luck" at NYU.
Was in NY for our holiday lunch (12/15) and hit Barneys afterwards, where I saw a very cute Bruce Springsteen. The Boss was watching wife Patty purchase some sort of jewelry gift. Looked just like any other guy waiting for his wife to finish buying stuff, but with a soul patch and shorter than expected. The next day I worked in our NY office and passed Gavin Degraw coming out of the lobby (J. Records is in our building). Had to check the Web for photo verification, but I was right to pick up on the cute guy in the doofy hat.
Just saw Cynthia Nixon on the checkout line at Zabar's. I didn't say anything, but she and my dad smiled and waved at each other—they work together a lot on NYC public school stuff. She looked low-key but pretty, and her hair keeps getting blonder and blonder.
Last Friday I was at LES bar the Living Room for my birthday festivities, and got totally distracted when Kevin Spacey walked in. Didn't have a good look at him b/c the bar was pretty crowded, but he was with some nondescript guys. Left wearing what looked like the very same knit hat one of my friends had lost that night — she was convinced he somehow stole it and stalked him to the next bar he went to where she yelled at him as he was getting into a car. Also, my roommate claims she saw Tony Danza leaving the bar too, but why Tony would be hanging out at the Living Room I have no idea.
On Sunday morning I saw Marc Summers (of Double Dare fame) in Sur La Table in SoHo, had just finished taping something for the Food Network. I almost crashed into him and didn't even look at him till I heard his game show host voice. Looked kinda freaky in lots of makeup. And finally, after leaving the kitchen store I saw Ralph Finnes walking down Broadway with some chick I didn't get a look at. His hair was sorta long and he was wearing a big black coat — honestly didn't look that great. Wouldn't have known for sure it was him if I didn't hear him talking as he walked by.
Saw rosario dawson trying on some seriously fugly sweaters at the bebe store on third ave and 50th street on friday. i wouldn't have recognized her if it hadn't been for the twelve sales girls all swarming her and bring out racks of sweaters for her to try on. she's a very striking woman, but i think maybe even just a little bit of makeup might have helped go a long, long way for her tired eyes. didn't realize it, but in person, she is seriously tiny ...
Saw Conan O'Brien and his adorable baby on Saturday afternoon while strolling down Columbus around 72nd. The sidewalk was really cramped because of christmas trees for sale, so we all had to squeeze by each other. He's taller than the trees.
Saw Eliza Dushku tonight around 5:00 PM at a little nonedescript new wine bar between Elizabeth and Mott on Prince. The place was deserted and she was getting interviewed. Very pretty and very tiny, wearing a big sherpa-ish hat...couldn't really imagine her kicking vampires' asses on Buffy. She seemed very nice and polite to the journalist and the owner.
Saw Jane Krakowski today (12/17) at the Post Office on Varick around noon. Waiting on line with the rest of the holiday-shipping masses, she looked pretty with no makeup, but had some awful Doc Marten-type shoes. Looks a bit bigger than in her must-be-thinner-than-Calista days, which is a good thing.
I was at the Waverly Diner last night and saw Sam Shepard walk by outside, twice (probably doubling back to get Jessica Lange some American Apparel metallic hotpants for Christmas). Eye contact was made. He's hot - a definite PILF (playwright I'd like to fuck), though you'll have to tell the kiddies he was Gosling's dad in The Notebook so they'll know who he is. Not that I've seen The Notebook.. 8 times.
On Friday 12/16, I was browsing through the overpriced shirts at American Apparel and I tried to get a salesperson to help me find something. As I was trying to get someone's attention, I noticed them all fawning over a couple of tall dudes standing at the counter, and completely ignoring me, the clueless commoner. When I heard one of them talk, I realized it was John Mayer. He was really tall, and with another dude. Talking to the enamored workers about how American Apparel should improve their ad campaign. Bought some long-sleeved shirts, I guess? Oh, and he was mysteriously missing those normally trademark dark circles under his eyes.
Last Monday, I saw Elvis Costello at Saks. He was wearing those cool plastic frames, but in sunglasses form. In the store. He was moving really fast once he got to the crowd near the exit. It was pretty obvious that he was trying to get the hell out of there without anyone noticing who he was, although with the huge, oblivious tourist contingency blocking the door, I doubt anyone did.
On the December 15, 7 p.m. American Airlines flight from JFK to LAX.... a very old, very ravaged looking Pat O'Brien in First Class. He's partied hard and it shows.
Went to opening night of "Mrs. Warren's Profession" at the Irish Repertory Theatre tonight (Sunday 18 December). Sitting at the end of my row was Gabriel Byrne, in attendance with an attractive middle-aged blonde woman and an attractive late-20s blonde woman. I think he was there to check out what his "Touch of the Poet" castmate Ciar n O'Reilly (Irish Rep co-founder) gets up to when he's not on Broadway.
Saw Al Sharpton and an incredibly attractive ladyfriend going into the 2:15 Syriana at the Lincoln Center cinemas... It pains me to say that he was borderline well dressed with an expensive cashmere overcoat and turtleneck sweater. His hair also didn't look as grey as I've seen it (dye job?) and overally looked way less sleazy than he usually comes across. The woman was shaking her head as they walked by a line of people inside saying "Don't even..." Tried to hear the rest of the conversation, assuming it was "Don't even think about not returning that campaign money..." but he disappeared inside the theatre before I could see the rest...
Just saw Rachel Ray hitching a ride on the back of Mario Batali's Vespa on Eighth Street. I know they work for the same network and all, but what is my future husband doing with that annoying little chihuahua? He is an actual chef. And am I the only one who suspects that Rachel from the Food Network and Rachel from last season's Real World may actually be the same person?
Hedwig himself, John Cameron Mitchell on the 14th and 7th Ave uptown subway platform on Monday midday. He looked cute, assuming you're into gay, East Village, motorcycle jacket-wearing leprechaun types.
On Sunday afternoon, I spotted Isaac Mizrahi at 6th Avenue and 11th Street with pup in tow. It's safe to say that Isaac had better hair than the pooch.
12/16 - 10pm showing of Dog Sees God (so freaking hilarious) Macaulay Culkin sat three seats in front of me - came in right before the show started with a group of guys.
Spotted Robert Wagner today in FAO Schwartz looking anxious to get in and find what they were looking for and get out. He was wearing sunglasses inside so as to disguise himself. Are the glasses really necessary?
Saw Bryan Adams at the New York Rangers-Vancouver Canucks game on Tuesday. I guess this is to be expected though.
Suck on this, Brokeback. An authentic gay cowboy sighting Wednesday night (12/14) at the Cutting Room: Randy Jones of the Village People, in the audience for the Joan Rivers show. Before the show began, Randy worked the entire room, seemingly happier than ever to see each and every fag, hag, or "other". He even took off his hat for a couple of minutes, but I'm pretty sure they it's in his lifetime contract to wear it at all times, even when he sleeps, just so he can be recognized as a Village Person. Sadly, didn't hear any chanting of "We want you... as a new recruit!" or see any letter-like gesturing.
I just saw bobby flay walking down 6th avenue at 53rd street, i guess because his new restaurant is around the corner. i was blinded by the sunlight, but recognized his voice from the food network as he was blathering on to an assistant-type hurrying along beside him. i hoped his hot law and order wife was with him (i adore her), but no luck.
