In this edition: Life imitates art for Kiefer Sutherland, Owen and Luke Wilson separately, Owen and Luke Wilson together, Scott Speedman, David Schwimmer, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, Tim Robbins, Meryl Streep and Jill Clayburgh, Chris Parnell, Mike Myers, Bobby Flay, Tom Cavanagh, Michael Showalter, Michael Ian Black, Michael Imperioli, Marcia Cross, Jesse Jackson, Julian and Vito Schnabel, Anh Duong, Lucy Liu, Martha Plimpton, Steven Van Zandt, Elizabeth Berkeley, Jerry Bruckheimer, Maverick Carter, Jesse Palmer, Bruce Willis, Inez Rivera, Tre Cool from Green Day, Bobby Cannavale, Tony Danza, and freshly-gay George Takai.
Well, Charlie Rose films his interview show out of Bloomberg studios, and sometimes we see the guests (celebrities) as they come in or leave. Usually when they come in they're taken to the green room to wait. Every guest on the show is asked if they would like a tour of Bloomberg while they wait 99.9% politely say no. Not Jack Bauer! So: Keifer Sutherland, some smoking hot chick and a huge bodyguard circle around the sales floor. He's clearly high as a kite and has this crazed look on his face, plus he's molesting this chick as he walks around the floor, with one hand he's waving to people while the other is clearly down this girl's pants. At any moment I expected him to pull out a gun and yell, "get down!" It's clear that the 80's have not ended for Keifer. The moral of the story: watch 24 this season, cause he's not acting.
Entertaining college kids from Texas today, so I took them to Magnolia Bakery in the West Village around 3pm. One of the kids walks across the street to a bookstore and stands next to Owen Wilson in line. Knit cap, rain jacket, jeans. Skinny. Then, not 5 minutes later, we pass a tired looking, "I partied all night, and I'm about to do it again" Luke Wilson. No doubt looking for the nearest Bloody Mary.
I saw a few random celebrities last night (1/13) upstairs at the Spotted Pig. Luke and Owen Wilson who were really cute but looked tired leaving the bar at about 1am. Right behind them was scruffy Scott Speedman from Felicity, who was gorgeous. Then totally randomly, David Schwimmer having a beer downstairs with a couple of guys and then coming upstairs to sit at a table in the corner all night. The guy doesn't smile. And he looked like he had a hint of the downs.
I just saw Gwyneth Paltrow walking into Janovic Plaza on 7th and 22nd wearing what appeared to be a full-on gramma afghan. She was, thankfully, without her now-trademark heavy black mascara, and her hair looked good. She didn't look very happy to be alive, though that could be because she appeared to be smuggling a small nation under the blanket.
Sunday morning 1/15, Equinox at 54th & Second: Nicole Kidman, gorgeous in tights and clingy T, doing free weights and then a spinning class, accompanied by a trainer who took full advantage of his status as only person there with permission to stare. Girlfriend is about eight feet tall, with flawless white skin, Cheeto-colored hair, and electric blue eyes. Seemed relaxed and gracious. Must be hard to be incognito when you look like that.
At last week's sold-out Ben Gibbard solo show at Bowery Ballroom, I whispered to my friend that this tall, ponytail-equipped figure dressed entirely in black standing next to us looked exactly like Tim Robbins' character from High Fidelity. "Umm, that is Tim Robbins" she remarked. And it was! After the show he walked past us, and I dropped a cash register on him.
At Abigail's Party on a freezing, windy Saturday night, Meryl Streep and Jill Clayburgh (together). They looked like two hip, urban 55 year olds and were seated in the very back corner for a quick departure after the show. Ms. Streep wore glasses, seemed a bit worried about getting noticed and kept her head down and wore a hat during intermission. But not a soul bothered them that I saw. And the show was fantastic. Jennifer Jason Leigh is genius.
On Friday (1/14), I saw SNL funnyman Chris Parnell and D-List Evangelist Jon Farb boozing at local favorite Lucky Strike in Soho. Just looking at Parnell made us laugh.
Mike Myers was dining at Rialto on Elizabeth Street Friday night with a model-type, young. She has wine and he ordered a scotch on the rocks. He looked really happy and had a good energy.
At Del Posto Thursday night, seated in the lounge section at a very cramped table by the entrance, Bobby Flay, wife and female friend having dinner. Guess he was there to check out the competition. Which, unless people want to pay $30 things like a tiny plate of sardines, will not be stiff. Of couse, we're in New York, so people will flock to pay $30 for a tiny plate of sardines.
I saw Tom Cavanagh earlier tonight (1/12) filming a scene for "Love Monkey", in Union Square. There was what seemed to be a lull between filming, and he was just standing around talking to everyone. He's a hell of a lot taller than I thought he'd be. Seemed approachable, although I didn't bother to. All this, during the one time I decide to leave my camera at home. Figures.
Just wanted to say I saw Michael Showalter at Thursday's We Are Scientists show. He was standing against the wall and spent a lot of time talking to a cute, tiny Asian girl who was watching the show and writing in a notebook. Also saw him DJ the afterparty at Rothko and talking to the same girl. He looked tired, but was friendly to anyone that came up to him to say hello.
Michael Ian Black, 22nd and 7th, looking normal and calm. Which is weird, if you think about it.
In attendance last night at the 5 O'Clock Heroes show at Mercury Lounge was ex-Soprano and Law & Order type Michael Imperioli, chatting up a fairly attractive, if not a touch weathered, brunette at the bar (who upon later eavesdropping appears to be a hair stylist of sorts). He looked exactly like Michael Imperioli, but mini. Or smaller than I expected. Probably 5'7", maybe 5'9" if you include that hair helmet. He seemed really genuine and attitude-free, though, and rocked out requisitely during the gig and clapped after each song. I root for him now.
I saw Marcia Cross this morning in the Jimmy Choo on Madison and 63rd. She looked very pretty, with her hair tied up loosely, and she's really tall. Most of the people in the store were crowded around the sale racks, but she was browsing calmly in the full price section. Maybe she was looking for shoes to wear to the golden globes? She didn t end up buying anything...
Saw Jesse Jackson, with a surprisingly small entourage, walking through midtown last night (1.11). He was nicely dressed, rocking a cell phone ear piece, and accompanied by just a couple of other men in suits, none of which were gigantic bodyguard types. I was pretty disappointed in the lack of drama associated with this sighting.
Thursday, January 12th, Chelsea: It was your typical openings night, where the New York art scenesters were downing white wine in clear plastic cups and checking out everyone else but the "art." At Cheim and Read Gallery, I saw the big man on campus, Julian Schnabel, looking like a camping lumberjack with his spawn, Vito Schnabel. Towards the end of the evening, artist/former model, Anh Duong, showed up in a gray plaid suit. An image of a horse raced through my mind. Thank God Lucy Liu entered as I was leaving. She was absolutely radiant, and all in black with her hair down. Yep, the night ended on a good note.
Saw Martha Plimpton outside of 'Cesca last night, smoking a cigarette. She looked thin and petite, and was wearing all black. She later rejoined 2 plain looking female dinner companions.
Today 1/12 After buying a few trashy skirts from Trash & Vaudeville on St. Mark's Place, I passed 'Little Steven' Van Zandt (of E Street Band & Sopranos fame) going in to see owner Jimmy Webb. He seemed nice, but definitely trollish in person. The last time I went to Trash I saw Dee Snider, so that store is totally old rock & roll guy heaven.
Last night at dinner with Balthazar with co-workers, I was looking around at the crowd and came face-to-face with Elizabeth Berkley and her husband, Greg Lauren. Looked like they may have been having dinner with parents, but seemed to be enjoying themselves. She's very tall and looks amazing, he was looking a bit scruffy, but a nice looking couple.
I saw Jerry Bruckheimer at Home Wednesday night Maverick Carter was there as well. Then I saw ex-Bachelor Jesse Palmer making out with some random girl there on Saturday night. I also saw Bruce Willis at Stereo Friday night.
Victoria s Secret model Inez Rivera was on my flight last night (Jet Blue! Who knew models travel cheap, just like the rest of us?) from Fort Lauderdale to Newark. She was listening to her ipod on the flight, while reading a book on (what else?) Kaballah.
I was walking around 41st St and 3rd Ave, eating my Tasti-D-Lite (free topping Friday!!) when I choked on a peanut. My coughing fit did not keep me from seeing an elfish dude wearing tight black pants and a funny hat who turned out to be none other than Tre Cool from Green Day. I'd recognize that face anywhere, mainly because I saw it on a Tower Records ad in the train this morning. The disappointing thing: he wasn't wearing eyeliner.
On January 12th, saw Bobby Canavale looking scrumptious early walking on West 3rd between Macdougal and Sixth avenue.
Saw Tony Danza apparently having some kind of office party at the Upper West Side dive Jake's Dilemma. He looked about 5' 7'', but still adorable with a killer smile. His crazy a** co-workers were freak dancing like no tomorrow, and I don't mean that in the good way.
Amidst a see of uncomfortable elderly theater-goers, I saw Star Trek's Mr. Sulu (George Takai) at Wednesday's matinee of The Little Dog Laughed. Had a chuckle at the irony of seeing the newly out actor at a play about a gay Hollywood actor in the closet and his "gay for pay" boyfriend. Also of note: Johnny Galecki's full-frontal moment in the play is, um, impressive to say the least. We were in the back row, and didn't need to squint.
