Two weeks ago the Times — both in print and in a video walking tour — directed its readers to the wonders of Menahata, the crazy second-floor Bulgarian bar at Broadway and Canal. Just days later, word came that the bar would be temporarily shut down while the building housing it was under construction. But now there's worse news, as reported by the blog Slavs of New York:

So now it's official. Mehanata is closed permanently as the building gets converted into a Ramada Inn. But now the fave Bulgarian bar is promising to reopen soon at a new location on the Lower East Side — no details yet on exactly where they'll end up.

They're also, apparently, looking to change the bar's name when it reopens. (Why bother? Doesn't everyone just call it Bulgarian Bar?) And that all seems a bit confusing — new location, new name, all that. Thank God we'll have Ariel Kaminer to explain it for us.
