Classic Gawker Stalker: There's No Escaping Colin Farrell's Nether Regions
Sightings are sent in by readers and then posted to our Gawker Stalker Maps. This is our occasional compilation of some of our favorites. Send your sightings to tips@gawker.com.
Warning: This may very well be the longest version of Stalker we've ever posted. That's what happens when we forget to do it for awhile.

So, after going through hell all weekend at the hospital of joint diseases, lending moral support to my bf who had full knee replacement surgery (at the tender age of 36), I decided to unwind with a nice, placid steam at the Russian Turkish Baths on 10th street. Figured I'd take a pull on my one-hitter before going in and then have the place to myself (it being a Monday and all). Sounds serene, right? Wrong. As soon as I go downstairs and hit the radiant heat room, who is staring me in the face but Colin Farrell's ass-crack (he likes to wear his shorts fashionably low). Let me tell you, nothing takes the peaceful piss out of that place like a celebrity. Even the zoned-out yoga folks, who you would think are above such petty corporeal obsessions, started talking like valley girls when he left the room "Ohmigod, is that who I think it is? NO wAAAy!" Things got really surreal when Pauly Shore showed up and, realizing his C-grade star wattage was snuffed out by Messrs. Farrell, did one loop of steams before leaving.
Spotted Lindsay Lohan at 99 Prince Street in the lobby of the Mercer Hotel. She was having dinner with: Dina, little sister, 2 males (scruffy looking), 1 female (publicist/personal assistant looking), and Marc Jacobs. They were eating dinner at the lobby hotel guest tables and seemed like a happy fam! We sat across from them having cocktails for about an hour, and La Lindsay herself went up to her room, came down about 20 minutes later in just a t-shirt and sweatpants eating Cap'n Crunch out of the box. Marc Jacobs kissed everyone goodbye, and brought two huge shipping bags to the desk to be sent up (assuming) to Lohan's room. Stalkerazzi positioned outside. Lalo moved to a couch closed to the front desk to canoodle with an ugly male that came to meet her at the end of the meal.
Just saw Johnny Depp walking through Union Sq. Park. looking like a beautiful gypsy hobo pirate with lots of rings, necklaces,& bracelets! He was wearing ripped jeans, a brown leather jacket, floppy newsboy hat, flannel shirt wrapped round waist, beat up boots & blue sunglasses. Grungy beard.
04/12/06 Pastis 2:30pm Leonardo DiCaprio, Vivek Sharma & Sienna Miller in a corner table. Vivek left with a handshake and a smile to Leo and a very public and nice, lingering peck on the cheek to Miller. As my spies stayed inside, I ran outside to see Vivek fleeing toward a waiting SUV, driven by a blonde female assistant. Inside, as of now (3:45pm), Leo & Sienna and still talking, over coffee.
Saturday night (4/15) @ 2:00Am, Sienna Miller in front of Don Hill's/Misshapes. Wearing a fedora hat, smoking while on the phone. She asked me what the name of the place was, then went inside and pretended to Dj till 4:00.
I saw Matt Dillon last night (4/10) eating dinner at Josie's, the overpriced natural/organic place on the UWS, at about 7. He looked pretty much exactly as he does in the movies, and was wearing an army green jacket and jeans (I think). He was with 2 male friends. He was hot; we made eye contact when he got up to go to the bathroom. Too bad I had a mouthful of bread. On a side note, our waitress told us that the entire wait and kitchen staff there was called earlier in the day by the management, threatening to fire any workers who skipped their shifts to go to the immigration rally downtown. She said all the kitchen staff and busboys were no-shows and went to the rally instead, and were going to be fired for it. I guess the people working there last night were scabs (that would explain the lousy service). Anyway, I thought the anti-labor stance was pretty disappointing considering it's supposed to be a "health food" restaurant. Aren't health foodies all supposed to be pinkos?
Last night at the Awake and Sing premiere I saw Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams. A few fans tried to get him to sign something, he was going to but Michelle pulled him along into the theatre on 44th Street about 7PM.
Saw Joaquin Phoenix at Morrison Hotel Fine Art and Music in Soho. He was inquiring about some Clash photographs by Bob Gruen (he has excellent taste!). I don't think they had the one he wanted in stock since he said to the lady behind the counter that he would come back when it was in. He was totally casual in jeans and a white button down. His entourage was a just couple of buddies.
Yesterday (Thurs 4/13) afternoon, Prince and Mulberry. I walked right by Benicio Del Toro. He's VERY tall, and has got quite a paunch. He was dressed pretty sloppy, all in black, and I believe he was wearing a trucker hat. Benicio, what happened?
Saw Steve Martin trying to be lo-pro today on 67th and Madison around 1:30, walking uptown in the rain in his best suburban dad outfit- baseball cap, golf jacket, khakis, etc. No Shopping Bags- maybe he was going to the Whitney?? Seeing him in this outfit killed any desire I had for this man.
Sitting at lunch at Barolo on Saturday in the late afternoon, I saw a very unshaven Jake Gyllenhaal and a cuter than I expected sister Maggie enter the front of the restaurant. Then later at Soho House I caught Aaron Eckhart, who's growing out his hair, at the next table chatting up two young ladies, one of who sported an odd, yet oddly attractive, artichoke print dress.
I saw Beyonce at the H&M (yes, H&M!) at 5th and 51st at 8 p.m. Friday. She bought about three bags of clothes, including a bikini (because who doesn't need an $18 bathing suit in St. Tropez?). She seemed nice enough, waving to fans, but not stopping to take pictures. The employees fell all over themselves, and she chatted politely with them, but not with the hoi polloi, who were kept at bay with her bodyguard. They closed the registers next to her, too. She was wearing an unfortunate red bandana and was small (5'4"?) and not entirely bootyliscious. I was the jackass who took a quick picture and I got yelled at by the bodyguard. No regrets.
I just spotted Kiefer Sutherland with model Lindsay Wight walking in Greenwich around 2:30. Kiefer was wearing a Yankees Cap, grey hoody and tight jeans. Lindsay looked as pretty and stylish as usual. She's quite tiny.
Just saw Liev Schrieber at Dean & Deluca Soho - he stood for a while smack dab in the front of the store texting someone, then wandered over to the bread department, snacking nonchalantly on a free sample from the bread basket. Guess SOMEONE'S not keeping Passover. Has a definite stubble-to-beard-length growth happening and is much better looking than I would have ever thought. I now understand the Naomi/Famke appeal.
4/17, 2:30pm Saw Edward Norton at the Spotted Pig having lunch with a business type. It was pure Norton — intense facial expression, hands gesticulating, etc. His lunch partner looked terrified.
I saw Ralph Fiennes this morning around 11 at the corner of Mercer and West Houston St. He looked like everyone in the morning in Soho looks, sleepy. He was unshaven but didn't look disheveled. As a rabid Harry Potter fan, had to muster up all of my resolve not to gasp, point, and hiss, "...we do not speak his name!"
At the Saturday night Clap Your Hands Say Yeah show at the Bowery, a surprisingly tall Josh Hartnett was in attendance, bringing with him his mullet and bad teen 'stache. Scarlett Johansson was with him, bull-ring intact and hair tucked under a hat. As for her being so "curvy," the girl is maybe 5'2" with not much meat on her. Apparently "curvy" means non-emaciated b-cup.
Saw a resplendent and very preggers Rachel Weisz with dopey looking husband Darren Aronofsky in front of La Esquina on Saturday afternoon. She looked great, but very soccer mom-ish with a shag hair do. She didn't seem especially warm or approachable, but that just might be the British accent.
Saw Ellen Pompeo and boyfriend in Nobu 57 around 7:30 last night (4/17). Walked right by me and sat in table in the corner. Ordered lots of food, including rice pudding for dessert. Looked very casual with her hair in a ponytail.
On my way to work this morning at about 9:25am, I saw Kevin Bacon walking on 54th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. He was wearing shorts and sunglasses, and a funny hat.
So I'm in the backseat of the car, driving down Ocean Avenue, near Flatbush Avenue. I say to my mother, "I don't understand how people in this neighborhood can afford such expensive cars", as I see a very nice Benz driving past us. I look in the passenger seat and who is sitting there? Busta Rhymes.
Hank Azaria & skinny blonde walked into Caf Angelique on Bleecker (at Grove) around 1 p.m. today. Mother & daughter tourists next to me stared, & quietly exclaimed, 'It's Phoebe's boyfriend!' while dad tourist dazed off in boredom. Skinny blonde smirked at the gawking before Azaria got them out of there fast. Azaria is gaunt & has no butt. He carries himself as if he has a huge ego.
Sarah Jessica Parker, son & an older handsome man sitting on her stoop near W. 4th (I won't give away her address) playing while a paparazzo snapped away several brownstones down & across the street. They played for awhile w/ Parker facing away from the camera before they headed inside. A tourist couple had the gall to stop at the steps and stare up at the family. SJP looks great without makeup & is very thin. Forgot to note if she had on Uggs.
Just saw Matthew Broderick. He was standing in front of me in the line at Duane Reade at 368 6th Avenue, about 15 min ago. On the walk home we passed Charles St where he lives, and my friend and I were discussing the fact that he didn't look very happy in the store. My friend said that maybe that's because the last movie just bombed and now he's thinking, "oh shit now I have to work"...and then we looked up and he was standing right in front of us, outside his townhouse. Thank God it was dark.
4/11—B'way and 38th: spotted Sigourney Weaver waiting to cross the street, in some sort of cashmere J Jill wrap and sunglasses. Classy as always, but I couldn't help notice her scorching case of marionette mouth. Sig, didn't your mom tell you not to scowl or your face will freeze that way?
I saw Kate Moss yesterday around 6:30 standing outside Balthazar, smoking a cigarette with an extremely attractive black man. She was completely oblivious to the crowd of middle aged female tourists assembled across the street taking her picture.
Spotted William Macy outside Soho house last night, 11pm. Very smart looking, with a brown suit, looked really relaxed. Was with a couple of friends, playing with a very powerful laser pointer. They then walked into Soho house when they were done.
Sat across from Nicole Richie (with one girl and 3 guys) at Nobu Next Door around 10:00 on Friday night. She's tiny. Lauren Graham from Gilmore Girls was also there sitting at the sushi bar in the back.
Jamie Lynn-Sigler at G Spa last nite at the Gansevoort Hotel, with her rumored fling Scott Sartiano. Jamie was drinking water. Looking verry skinny.
Saw the world's most famous female soccer player, Mia Hamm, in the flesh 1 train 79th street station looked tan, fit, and fierce lugging a duffel bag.
Ashanti coming out of Penn Station. She had on sunglasses with jeans. I said hey, she said hey back. Seemed like a cool girl. No bodyguards, no nothing.
Spotted Keri Russell (Felicity) getting off the "D" train at West 4th. She was moving quickly and trying not to be noticed but a second glimpse as she walked up the stairs confirmed it. Terrific looking gal. 4:50 pm on Sunday April 16th.
This morning (11:30 am, 4/15/2006) I was sitting outside at "Good Enough to Eat" (83rd and Amsterdam) and I saw Chris Klein walk by in an olive Che Gueverra hat, jeans and a navy t-shirt. He was walking hand in hand with a tall and skinny but rather unattractive blond and they walked into a bodega together. About 10 minutes later they both emerged laden with bags clearly carrying a huge load of liquor and preceded to make out on the street corner and hold hands. They crossed 84th street and walked west. Me and my brunch companion were shocked, considering Chris Klein was cut, tall, and very good looking, we both thought he could do way better in the chick department. While all this was going on I saw Kevin Bacon leaving "Good Enough to Eat" incognito. He had on a hat and sun glasses. However he also seemed to have this shit eating grin like "Yes I am Kevin Bacon, and yes I am incognito. Now all of you are only one degree away from me!" He was very thin and his face looked a mess—pock marked? My friend wanted me to stop Kevin since I'd gone to high school with his nephew but I was like "What am I going to say? Hi Kevin, your nephew is a tool!"
Saw Damon Dash & the rest of the Dash clan around 5 PM today on the 4th floor home department of Ralph Lauren on Madison Ave. It sounded like he was trying to haggle with one of the sales associates about something and left the floor saying "this is real beauty!" gesturing toward his wife, and "this is a real family" as he followed them into the elevator. His wife is pretty and his kids are adorable, but he seemed kind of smug and arrogant. He was saying something about "creating an image" to the doorman as he left the store. They then went across the street to Polo Sport, where he tried on nautical gear. He was making kind of a scene about it all. Oh and before I saw any of them I distinctly smelled a skunky weed odor in the RL home department. I wonder...
Spotted Jonathan Rhys Meyers last night (2am) at BLVD. He was standing waiting for a drink and the bar and I went right up to him, said hi, and drunkenly told him he was hot. He responded nicely enough and walked over to the dance floor. If I had been more sober, I probably could have had a conversation with him. BLVD doesn't really strike me as a cool celebrity hang out though.
Saw Missy Elliot at Willowbrook mall in New Jersey. She had jeans on and looked busted, she was wearing a brown hoody and a brown hat trying to cover her face, she was with 2 other girls and 1 had a baby, she was also with this guy who looked really flamboyant. She also made a purchase at the Body Shop there. She was also very short, maybe 5'2".
Matt Lauer and wife along with Bryant Gumbel and his family eating lamb and other treats celebrating over dinner at Sapa restaurant last night.
Could swear I saw Anna Wintour going down the escalator at the Union Square United Artist Theater at around 8:45 Thursday night with a male companion. Both looked not unhappy.
Graydon Carter, looking slightly grumpy and sallow, dining w/ a male chum at Da Silvano, on the sidewalk tables in the sun.
Was at The Spotted Pig Last night in the private lounge area and spotted Patrick Bateman, err, Brett Easton Ellis, with Men's Vogue's Hud Morgan, pretty little Chris Rovzar and a few other hot guys. Brett was much better looking in person. Only saw him go to the men's room once.
Just saw Bradley Cooper running, looking sweaty and yummy outside Chelsea Piers. 6pm, Thursday April 13th.
Yesterday around 4:30 at the Oscar Blandi Salon on 65th and Mad - Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos with Joaquin and Lola getting hair cuts from Oscar himself. Kelly was adorable when Lola told her that she wanted to cut all her hair off! About 5 inches later, the little one walked out with a cute bob! Kelly looked incredible, no make-up and still gorgeous! Mark was tipping very generously all of the staff that was even close to the location of the haircut - very impressive.
Anthony Edwards walking up 81st street between 3rd and Lex on Wednesday night at 8:30pm. Wearing a jean jacket and looking scruffy. No glasses. Smiled at my friend and me once he spotted us looking at him.
Owing to lovely the weather was yesterday, I decided to walk the rather long route from Rock Center to 57th and 11th Ave. to pick up my car where it was getting serviced. En route, I passed by the Ed Sullivan theater where, by the service entrance (53rd St. b/w Broadway and 8th Ave.), I noticed a gathering crowd. Never one to shirk my Stalker duties, I waited patiently to be rewarded with the clicking of tourist cameras and the appearance of the pert and lovely Julia Louis Dreyfuss. Looks like Elaine was on Letterman, probably plugging her TV show in a last-ditch attempt to avoid being another casualty of the putative Seinfeld Curse. I got close enough to make eye contact and wave, to which she smiled and waved back with what I can only interpret to be wanton lust in her eyes (fuck off, it's my story). Giddy with enough Stalker juice to offset the cost of the car repair ($473 for an "air flow detector??" I'll pay you, just admit that you made it up.), I got on to the gridlocked West Side Highway where I was cut off around 51st St. by a taxi carrying none other than Sirius darling, Howard Stern. Traffic cleared up around 42nd St., at which point I managed to advance and get pole position at a red light right next The Man himself, who was in the back seat, crouched low next to some aging comic-looking dude sporting a bad ponytail and earring—possibly Penn Jillette, but not certain. I gave a number of thumbs ups, the universal sign for "hey, you're a celebrity and I am a starfucking loser," none of which were reciprocated. Not even a nod. Nothing. Like all hardened luminaries, he has perfected the Zen-like practice of staring right past you. Dick.
Leelee Sobieski on a bathroom run at Winebar (2nd Ave. & E. 4th St.) in the East Village at about 11:30 pm on 4/13. She comes in, asks to use bathroom only, while the guy she's with, hot in a downtown way, waits outside on the street. She's very tall, skinny, with lots of makeup. Prettier than I expected. They leave arm in arm.
I just saw Chris Robinson sans Kate Hudson shopping for DVD's upstairs at Kim's on St. Mark's Place. I know it's cliche to talk about how unkempt and crusty he is, but he really had some awful style (red socks with old school ugly bright blue puma's with super long laces. ugh.) and some bell bottom jeans with a cheesy sun patch on it. He's going to look really scary in about 10 years. Yikes!
Last night (4/13) at about 10 30, I saw Amy Poehler and Will Arnett sitting at an outdoor table at Le Singe Verte in Chelsea (7th Ave @ 19th St). They were there with some other people, too...looked like they were all getting drunk.
Just saw Drew Barrymore & Fabrizio Moretti in Washington Square Park at around 3.30pm today (Sunday April 16). Fabrizio was walking the dog while Drew casually walked beside him, carrying a drink. I think I was the only one that noticed them—they were blended well with the crowd with hats and sunglasses.
On 57th and Park at 8:45 pm, Wolf Blitzer was waiting for his table at the bar area of BLT Steak, with an attractive woman who appeared a little younger than him. He looked just like he does on TV, no surprises.
Oliver Platt (also currently on half the signs on the subways and buses for Huff) was walking east on Greenwich Ave near 7th Ave at about 330pm.
DJ AM at Crobar at 12am. last night (4/14). He was super cute and walked in with just 2 other guys through the front door. I just went up to him and said, "I'm obsessed with you!" and just laughed a little and asked me my name and introduced himself. I told him his girlfriend was gorgeous and he said, "Yeah, she is" with a big smile! It was super cute and he really didn't have an ego at all—he's shorter than I imagined though!
Jena Malone walking out of Chinese grocery store on Mott and Hester with look of dismay as she opened up her cheap, broken, black umbrella. From looks of the acid washed denim jacket and Jansport backpack of the middle aged woman she was with, I would guess she was showing family around town. There was also a cute kid of age 8 or so which Jena protectively wrapped her arm around when she saw me gawwking at them.
Drea de Matteo, 3:30 pm, she was in front of 145 East 32nd St, going to Dr. Wexler's. Stopped to chat, and she indicated Joey was cancelled, she hated the show, and that she's glad to be back in NYC! Word to that, Ade! She said she wasn't going for anything big and not to worry, just a peel or something.
Today I was outside of the B&N on 66th and Columbus, talking on my phone. Mid sentence, I stopped talking because there was Alan Alda, strutting down the street by himself in a beige suit and sunglasses. He looked great! I couldn't remember what I was saying, so I just said to my friend on the phone, "Sorry, what was I saying? I was distracted— I just saw a familiar face on the street."
Tuesday, April 11—Jason Lee, sans moustache, toasting friends and his Stereo skateboard company co-owner, Chris Pastras, during a party at ironically enough, Stereo on West 29th Street.
Sat next to Denis Leary during dinner at Perry St. last night. I considered asking him to regale us with Ice Age quotes, but instead gawked from a distance as he and his striped shirt companion made tandem trips to the restroom.
Saw Elijah Wood at the Gogol Bordello show at Warsaw in Greenpoint last night (April 12th). Was probably there to see his girlfriend Pamela Racine, Gogol's drummer, perform. I heard they met on the set of "everything is illuminated" — Jonathan Safran Foer's got his hand in everything these days.
Saw Henry Kissinger, looking very well, walking west at a decent clip with another man on 52nd Street at Park.
As my colleague and I were coming back from a lunch run at 1pm today, we ran into Jane Krakowski coming out of our building at 200 Park Avenue South. She was probably visiting that big shot lawyer that has offices in our building, as do many other celebrities. Looked really good and had her blonde hair done nicely.
Julia Roberts with husband Danny Moder at Mayrose, 21st and Broadway. Diminutive but beautiful. Left and headed up Broadway on foot, embracing.
The non-anorexic Olsen, Ashley, sitting alone on a park bench in Central Park, putting out a cigarette by jamming it into the bench.
I helped Kathy Hilton in Saks Fifth ave. She had bought 2 fox shawls, one for Nikki and one for Paris. She said that every time she goes shopping she has to pick up something cute for them.
I saw Sarah Vowell at jury duty today at 100 Centre St. She was there from 10am -3 pm. She kept to herself and read her NYTimes before getting dismissed after lunch.
Just sat next to the former Mr. Roberts, Benjamin Bratt, at the Time Warner cable office on 23rd street just west off of Park ave. It's nice to know that despite his good looks, fame, and wealth, his cable box was just as crappy as mine.
Walking down 9th ave between 52nd and 51st, Anderson Cooper was walking with his head down. A homeless man walked up to his side and said something. Cooper just yelled "YES" and kept walking.
Literally ran into Marky Mark Wahlberg getting off the elevators at Equinox Gym in the Time Warner Center today.
Saw Josh Lucas yesterday (4/11/06) walking down Prince St. in SoHo at around 7:30pm. I usually expect celebrities to look worse in person, but he was absolutely gorgeous in a very casual/weathered way. He was wearing sexy jeans and a fitted, vintagey-looking button-down shirt. Some stubble. I almost creamed my pants right then and there.
Saw NY Giants quarterback/former "The Bachelor" Jesse Palmer holding hands with a tall, skinny blonde. They were walking a huge mastiff around the Turtle Pond in Central Park.
Monday 4/17 9pm: Saw Duchess Sarah Ferguson, "Fergie", and her daughter at Cipriani Downtown. She was wearing a nice grey/beige knee length coat with sparkly buttons, navy tights and cool blue pumps. She seemed very friendly. Looked good for a 40something.
Lionel Ritchie sans Nicole at Barney's on Madison. All the queens were pretending not to care, but you know they did. He was taller than I expected (I assume all stars are midgets) and was sporting a pure white blazer- which reflected a flattering light back onto his human-like face. Guess that runs in the family...
Mario Batali eating at Nathan's in Coney Island—with kids and woman—on Easter Sunday. He was wearing his infamous shorts and orange clogs.
I saw Frank Rich walking down The Bowery in Cooper Square. From afar I was trying to figure out why this fat guy was sort of bopping around as he walked, but then I saw that he was listening to an iPod.
4/12 12:45 pm Martha Stewart shopping and talking on her cell at the Union Square Farmers Market. She is tall and not bad looking for someone her age.
About 5PM on Saturday, caught a glimpse of the now-seemingly omnipresent Seann William Scott and a lady friend exiting Agozar on Bowery. He looked pretty much like Stiffler, only with a full beard.
Saturday 4/15, 10:30pm. While getting drinks at Blue Owl with a friend, we saw Bobby Flay and his wife Stephanie March come in. They seemed very low key. It looked like the manager was showing them the private room in the back, but they settled in for drinks in the main lounge area.
I saw Terry Richardson walking a/his dog across the street from Tiny's at Rivington and Norfolk. Then about 5 minutes later waiting outside the Hotel on Rivington.
Michael Rapaport just bumped into me in front of the Newscorp building. (6th Ave. b/t 47th and 48th) He politely said "Excuse me," but he looked a little annoyed and in a hurry. Pretty normal looking guy. I'm guessing that he's appearing on Fox News to promote his Fox sitcom.
I saw everyone's favorite Reverend, Al Sharpton, at the Starbucks on 47th off of 5th Avenue. He was wearing a very matchy brown pinstripe linen outfit, a cross between business savvy and what one might find at a bocce tournament in Boca. He was also ordering while talking on the cell phone, which very clearly annoyed the barista and in turn made me and my extra hot sugar-free vanilla soy latte order sort of look like assholes.
Just saw Angie's dad Jon Voight walking alone heading south on 6th ave and 55th street. He was wearing all black and carrying a suitcase or briefcase. He looked rather pensive.
John Ventimiglia ("Artie Bucco" on The Sopranos) must have just moved to my neighborhood in Park Slope, because over the last week I've seen him three times walking around the intersection of Union & 7th Avenue. Last night he was in line behind me at the pizza place on that corner, dressed casual with a beat-up white floppy hat pulled down over his brow. He (very politely) asked the guys behind the counter if any of the pies were fresh out of the oven; when they told him it would be five to ten minutes for a fresh pie he decided not to wait. Guess he likes him a hot slice.
My girlfriend and I had a late lunch with some friends at La Goulue (64th/Mad) on Easter Sunday after a stroll in the park. Sitting at the outside table closest to the door were Star Jones and her "husband", she inexplicably wearing some sort of fur jacket, drinking champagne. There is no way he's not gay—you could see him a mile away, all decked out in white.
Friday night saw Liza Minnelli going through security at LaGuardia on her way to an American Airlines flight. Followed by an assistant wearing a really bad outfit and giant fur boots. She carried Liza's dog carrier, but the schnauzer was running loose while Liza attracted attention to herself by calling for it through the terminal.
Ed: And, without further ado, the Earl Grey's latest ramblings. Presented unedited, 'cause we sure as shit couldn't read the whole thing:
LARRY GAGOSIAN Tuesday April 18, 2006 Lexington & 71st.
5:45 pm. Larry Gagosian & I are both headed into the closet-like magazine shop at 71st & Lex. I know how narrow the store is, so I tarry by the newspapers outside & let him enter the store first. As 2 people exit I see there's space for me, and I am immediately attracted by the spanking new, printer-fresh issues of Vogue & Bazaar May, 2006 piled on the low front wooden shelf of the store. Gagosian is wearing a navy blue blazer, not particularly sharply cut, nor pressed, just a fairly standard navy blue blazer. There are three silver buttons on each sleeve; as you know blazers traditionally have gold buttons, or I personally have Brooks Bros. change the gold buttons to navy suit buttons. Oddly enough, the last time I saw Larry, last autumn at his Madison Ave gallery space, I swear he was wearing the exact same navy blazer with 3 silver sleeve buttons! His uptown Gallery [he has a cavernous Chelsea space too] is at 980 Madison, the old Parke-Bernet building, which now houses a corporate HQ for Ralph Lauren and Gagosian Gallery on the top 2 floors.
His trousers today are the most rakish aspect of his look. They are chocolate brown slacks, with a tan or light brown banker's-width pinstripe. The material looks like velvet. It has a sheen and a fine weave appearance that truly is velvet-teen. I have also seen fine corduroy jackets in such a smooth, shimmery fabric. They look comfortable but not that worn in really, the velvety corduroy is still shiny so they may be fairly new. I wonder who
makes chocolate brown pin-stripe velvet/cord slacks? Brioni? Dolce & Gabbana? His shoes are black, chunky penny loafers. They are not particularly polished or new at all. In fact Im tempted to say they're Bass Weegun black penny loafers, they are really basic & chunky. Honestly I would not wear black shoes with a brown pant, but I am aware that in fashion lately there is a lot of talk of 'brown & black' together; not that Larry is a slave to fashion, but some would OK his brown pants/black shoes combo, although it's not to my taste.
Along with his chocolate pinstripe slacks, his dress shirt is my other favourite aspect of his look. Its a white dress shirt with contrasting stripes: a navy blue/white striped section [like a brooks bros. blue/white pencil stripe] and then a section of apricot, orange, and possibly brown thin stripes: so that is a colourful, cute & charming symphony of stripes, with a light-hearted spring-y tonality - the tradititional blue pencil stripe set off by the ice-cream coloured, pastel-y apricot & orange. Its a fine-looking dress shirt & again I cant guess exactly if its Brioni or Pink or other but its a quality & fresh-looking dress shirt, perfect for a 70 degree spring day like today; and also the choclate slacks work charmingly with the sweet apricot and happy orange shirt tones.
I linger a bit over the new editions of Bazaar & Vogue & watch to see what Gagosian purchases. In less than a minute in the store, he had already grabbed New York mag [Julia Roberts cover], Vogue [Keira Knightly, just came out today], Town & Country, Wallpaper, and CAR. CAR is the only title of these 5 with which I am not familiar The cover story in CAR is "BRIT" cars with a sleek silver auto against a Union Jack graphic. As one might expect Larry is known as a conoisseur of the finest sportscars, what does he drive around East Hampton, a Ferrari or Lambourgini? Is his property adjacent to Two Mile Hollow Beach? Think so....Someone knows what he drives. I dont know about you, but I purchase perhaps 1 or 2 mags at a time. Larry was bold to grab 5 at once, and plopped them down at the register. I had already picked up the May Bazaar & placed it on the counter next to his so that I could examine Larry's choices. Then I boldly inquired of the Indian cashier if he had the new NYLON [Mischa Barton cover]. Since I have shopped here many, many times before, and they know I always ask for the glossy, picture, fashion mags the very day of their printing/release, the kind Indian shopkeep confidently asserted that he did have the new Nylon [although it wasnt on display], I would not catch him up short, and he sent his charge to find it for me. As he did this, I could sense Larry growing impatient at the register. We had entered the store together, he chose his fistful of mags immediately, the cashier was paying attention to ME, not the multi-millionaire, world-reknown art dealer. I was the one seeking the more obscure NYLON, I asked for it a few times & I doubt Larry had ever heard of it. His time is much more valuable than mine, I am the first to admit. As shopkeep #2 found the Nylon, my Indian friend rang up Larry's 5 titles. His total was $28.98, I wrote it down on a Lotto slip right there so I could tell you precisely. That is buying power, 5 thick titles at once. He paid cash. My Bazaar & Nylon combined were but $7.49.
As Larry was paying, I studied his profile. I have seen him a few times in recent years & I never noticed how rough his skin is on his cheeks & jaw. You would think someone of his stature could have better skincare! However, his mass of grey hair is impressive, it's full, bold & coiffed & I believe it is his own hair. Its a nice steely grey, and its arranged firmly in a business-appropriate curved swoop on his forehead. He's about 5'11" or so,
maybe 6', and built more muscularly and imposingly than one might imagine.
He's a brawny, confident, demanding presence. While studying his magazines at the register, I noted his captain of industry magnetism. In fact, even though I had the shopkeep scurrying around & slicing open stacks of fresh magazines to locate my lonely Nylon, Larry actually managed a half-smile at the register. He loves to get his way, and does, so perhaps he liked my more modest demand of the May Mischa Barton NYLON.
The sunny, 70-degree spring day & his apricot dress shirt may also have elevated his mood. Last time I saw him, at his Madison Ave. Gallery last autumn, he did not look nearly as happy. In fact, while I chatted with his gorgeous, upper floor gallery assistants about the Andy Warhol show, Larry eyed me suspiciously, even testily. We both knew that I wasnt going to buy a $5 million Warhol or a wall-sized Twombley, but he needn't have been dismissive. He even had a nice suntan that day, autumn in LA or East Hampton perhaps? I said to his assistants, "Larry didnt look too happy there." The gorgeous brunette said 'He has a lot on his mind." Today, no suntan, pale & with roughly-textured skin, Larry still managed a half smile at the magazine stand even though I delayed his purchase by a minute or more with my obscure Nylon request.
I wondered, doesn't wealthy Larry subscribe to NY Mag, Vogue, Town & Country? Or maybe, like me, he knows that the sub. issues arrive in NYC a week or 2 later than the newsstand shipments. Maybe, like me, Larry has to have the latest Vogue the very day it appears on NY's newsstands, weeks ahead of the rest of the country's subscribers. Maybe Larry & I are more alike than I realized. Todays happy, ice cream colours, pinstripe chocolate slacks & spring-borne half-smile showed me that, underneath it all, maybe Larry really is a decent guy, despite his intimidating, imposing reputation.
Maybe.
Post-Script: In case you were wondering about the May Bazaar & NYLON: Bazaar: Lindbergh has an excellent Carolyn Murphy editorial but his J Lo. cover shoot is average at best. Hilary Rhoda has 2 good edits. Julia Stegner has several bikini pictures scattered throughout that are by far the best thing in the magazine.
NYLON: Mischa Barton is a gorgeous actress and a fine model but owner/editor Marvin Scott Jarrett's mediocre photo abilities are stomach-turning. Lithuanian IMG model Dovile Versilaite's swimsuit edit by Stacey Mark steals the magazine. Full reviews later in the week....
