From antiqued gossip Liz Smith's column today:
If you're a New Yorker, you know there's a big signboard on Sixth Avenue close to 42nd Street telling the tale of the ever-increasing national debt. This was erected in 1989. It's expected to run out of digits in 2007.
Poor Liz. The debt clock was removed in September of 2000 — the year when she first started drinking formaldehyde.
UPDATE: And apparently, it was restarted in 2002 — the year when we first started eating crack for breakfast. But Liz and the formaldehyde? We know we got that part right.
