Writing in today's Times about the corrosive effect of money on politics, Clyde Haberman chastises the Clintons for constant cash-grubbing, particularly the recent Rolling Stones concert held in honor of the former president's birthday. Clyde then goes on to criticize a number of other state politicians, including embattled comptroller Alan Hevesi, before tying it all up with this gem:

Even without the benefit of attending the Clintons' Rolling Stones concert, the comptroller has now absorbed the wisdom of the philosopher Mick Jagger: You can't always get what you want.

"But if you try sometime," Mr. Jagger also said, "you just might find, you get what you need."

Lord knows we've been trying.
