TODO is one daily thing recommended for you, by us.

If you spend enough time in Manhattan, you will eventually find yourself looking for a place to drink on the Upper East Side. It's not a prospect sane New Yorkers relish, and when it happens, it's something you want to claim as an accident or a big misunderstanding (like getting urine on your pants leg, or propositioning your roommate). Going out on the UES presents one with a seemingly endless hellscape of sports bars that don't even have the minimal downmarket appeal of their counterparts on the Upper West. As for the typical clientele, the less said, the better. But there is an oasis in this desert: the Auction House, a shabby chic lounge at 89th Street and 2nd Avenue. Bit pretentious certainly, what with the goth-Victorian decor and giant nude portraits. Such an establishment might be a second-string choice in more hipster-friendly neighborhoods. But in the context of the UES, Auction House becomes the veritable Holy Grail of nightlife. A very slight dress code (specifically: no baseball caps) helps slow the ingress of local retardation, and the lack of blaring TVs is a true blessing. Beer/wine selections and cocktail choices are modestly good, but again, you're here not for expert mixology but to escape what's outside the door. We could never in good conscience recommend a special UES trip just to visit the Auction House, but if you're there anyway, the joint just might save your life (or at least your evening).
