It's official: Supreme Court Justice David Souter is indeed retiring. Confirmation of the news came from Barack Obama himself, who just crashed the White House daily press briefing.

While Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was at the podium deflecting questions about Souter, whose resignation had not yet been confirmed, Obama walked into the room and said, "I'm tired of Gibbs screwing this thing up!" (We are too.) Obama continued, "when there's a job to do, you've got to do it yourself."

Obama said he just got off the phone with Souter, and officially announced his intention to step down.

After the appearance, NBC News' Savannah Guthrie said, "I felt a little bit like I was having a dream sequence... We attend those briefings every day and rarely are they so exciting."
