This weekend, after several false alarms, searchers finally found some bodies from Air France 447, which "disappeared" over the Atlantic Ocean one week ago.

Search teams from France and Brazil have found a total of 17 bodies, along with debris including luggage and pieces of the plane's wing, floating about 700 miles off Brazil's coast. [Perhaps we can now stop saying that the plane "disappeared."] But the prospect for recovering all 228 people on board is looking bleak:

The part of the ocean where the debris and bodies have been found ranges between 19,685 and 26,247 feet (6,000 and 8,000 meters) deep. The search area covers 77,220 square miles (200,000 square km), an area nearly as big as the country of Romania.
