Sex Does Not Sell Movies; Indians Do
The showbiz news cycle has ground to a halt. But you'll be glad you stuck with it, because two stories in today's trades reveal very conclusively that sex does not sell but Indians dancing do. Use this knowledge wisely.
•That's right: Contrary to cliched advertising executives on every cable drama ever, sex does not sell! According to a recent study of 900 films released between 2001 and 2005, sex and nudity "failed to positively affect a film's popularity among viewers or critics" and had no affect on box office results. So, expect no more nudity or sex in next year's Hollywood films. [The Wrap]
•The Bollywood film "3 Idiots," however, grossed an impressive 1 billion rupees worldwide this weekend, the best of any Indian film ever. It's a little less impressive when you consider that's $21.4 million. But the film's success offers further proof that India's film industry is on the cusp of an unprecedented worldwide breakthrough. •Sundance just got gayer: The Hollywood Reporter reports that GLAAD will be an official "institute associate" for the first time this year. Ironically, GLAAD will host LGBT-related programs throughout the festival on the second floor of Park City's Elks Building, which must be the least gay venue ever. [THR]
•Racist puppet comedian Jeff Dunham's Comedy Central show will not be picked up for a second season. Ratings had been consistently declining, likely due to the fact that the show was comprised almost completely of racist puppetry. [Variety]
