Our Favorite New Year's Moments in Movies
When the New Year comes, it makes us think about what we can do differently this year. We vow to lose weight, to quit smoking, and to stop watching Intervention and Say Yes To The Dress marathons.
Do we do these things? No. The truth is nothing really changes, and yesterday's weaknesses are tomorrow's weaknesses, New Years be damned. But! There is a world where the New Year can mean the beginning of a new chapter of your life, a new beginning, a new chance to do things differently this time around. That world is, of course, the world of movies. So kick back, relax, watch these scenes of cinematic New Years revelry, and pretend for just a few minutes that life is as simple as it is in movies, and that people really can change.
When Harry Met Sally
The best New Years ever. If this doesn't make you happy there's nothing to be done for you. Go have some eggnog.
Forrest Gump
Let's ring in 1972 with Forrest Gump, Lieutenant Dan, and two trashy babes.
Bridget Jones' Diary
This movie begins and ends with the New Year. I'm giving you both, because they are both awesome.
The Godfather II
Ah. New Years in Cuba. The cigars, the dictators, the memories. The perfect time to conduct some *ahem* family business.
Boogie Nights
The ultimate feel-bad ending to the 70's.
Rosemary's Baby
"To 1966: The Year One!" When you start eating raw meat, that's how you know the holidays have gotten to you. That or you're pregnant with the devil's baby. Or both!
The Apartment
Another feelgood ending. Shirley McClaine is super adorable in this movie.
Bitter Moon
New Years is also the perfect time for exploring your latent lesbianism. At least according to Roman Polanski, as you can see in this scene from Bitter Moon.
