Never before has the existential turmoil of a classic children's story resounded as readily as now, with directorial genius Werner Herzog, that champion of the darkness of the human psyche, giving his own re-telling of Madeline.

Even if it's only a fan's best attempt at Herzog's measured Bavarian accent, the language is spot-on, in the tradition of the master's hysterically dismal documentary narration.
