What do you have to do to be arrested for stalking someone online? I'm asking for a friend.
*ignore* This comment is useless when Gawker's photo upload facility is failing again.
Schizophrenia often hits people in their 20s, and it's often not easily treated. One of the first signs is attention-seeking behavior coupled with rhetoric that initially makes sense but then goes off the rails.
I'm no doctor, but if I had to guess, that's what's going on here. (Of course, if I'm wrong and he's just being all performance-arty, carry on.)
So... do we mock him as we do Tucker Max and The Hipster Grifter, assuming that he knows exactly what he's doing? Or do we show some compassion to someone who may or may not be mentally ill?
@BettyCrocker: My brilliant, beloved cousin had his first psychotic break during his freshman year in college. What followed was years and years of agony for him, his parents, his siblings and all the extended family. During the first phase of his illness, he was hospitalized multiple times - usually involuntarily. He is now stable and living a relatively quiet and productive life, thank God, but we can all sense when he's especially on edge.
So yeah, I vote compassion.
But that compassion should not be blind. Hamilton, you should take care. For whatever reason, he has turned his sights on you. Unless and until he finds the treatment that can tame his demons, he will continue to focus on you.
"You're committed."
This kid seems like one of those dudes who like getting attention for being "weird" and has subsequently drank a little bit too much of his own kool-aid. Is that the path to crazytown? (not the band) Not sure. The letter to the Observer just seems like a silly and desperate ploy to get attention, but that Hamilton Nolan stalker website was just creepy. I can see how Ivanka could be afraid that he might be let off his chain. Better to keep him on a very short leash.
