Fortune Magazine just posted an interview with America's favorite hooker-loving ex-governor, Eliot Spitzer. He wants to stage a comeback. Now the question is: How long before we start getting the mailers?

Here is what Spitzer told Fortune during their March 31st interview:

I love politics," Spitzer told me on March 31. "The substance, the debate about the issues ..." As for a race in 2010? It is "just hard to see," he says. But he adds, "I've never said I would never consider running for office again."

Dun. Dun. DUNNNNNNNN...

So, what office? How about New York state comptroller:

In the office of New York state comptroller, he sees a chance to become a national force, wielding the billions held in public pension funds to force corporate reform in a way that even lawsuits and regulation cannot. ("It is the great underutilized position in government right now," says Spitzer.)

This sounds like the perfect job for Spitzer, actually: If he has a relapse and starts sleeping with hookers again, no one will care. Because, what does a comptroller even do? Sounds like something with computers. For all we know, the current New York state comptroller is doing piles of coke off his adding machine while getting hand jobs paid for by state pension money. It's like, OK, buddy, have fun—just make sure all that comptroller stuff gets done.
