Former NYC Police Commissioner Bernard B. Kerik is headed to a federal prison in Maryland today to serve a four year sentence for lying to Bush administration officials and tax fraud. He blogged his last night of freedom.

So what did Kerik do last night? What any true, no bullshit, ex-cop with a mustache would do: he watched Rocky with his kids. Sly Stallone is a man of honor, just like Benrnard Kerik. He specifically wanted his kids to hear Rocky Balboa say, "The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are." Kerik writes on his blog that, "When Sly Stallone wrote those words, he was talking about the challenges in real life and the principles of courage, strength, and perseverance." Kerik is just like Rocky: a misunderstood tough guy who is always fighting for what is right.

The hero of 9/11 had some choice words for the judge in his case, too.

Ignoring the signed plea agreement and recommendations made by the prosecutors, as well as the recommendation of the U.S. Department of Probation and my highly decorated service to the American people, the judge sentenced me to 48 months in federal prison – 15 months over the recommended and agreed upon sentence.

But Kerik wants you to know he's not just your average True American Hero. He has a deep side that no one has seen before, and he quotes Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, the psychiatrist and author of On Death and Dying to prove it:

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within." I'm not exactly a stained-glass window, I don't think I've sparkled or shined, and I certainly don't claim to be beautiful, but I do think there is a light within me!

There is a light somewhere deep inside the tortured soul of Bernard B. Kerik, and it's trying to get out. If there is a bright side to his imprisonment, it will be the blog updates that flow out as Kerik finds his true self among the lowlifes in jail. Free Bernie!
