If you missed 2008's Let the Right One In, an ethereal but deeply unsettling vampire movie (based on a book) from Sweden, go and watch that before you see Let Me In, the inevitable American version of the same tale.

Though we've certainly earned the right to be skeptical about American updates of perfectly-good-on-their-own foreign fare (from Coupling to most of J-horror), I must say that, judging from the brief 1:17 length of footage here, this seems to hew pretty closely to the original in terms of look and tone. Of course there's the added American electric guitar and flashes of kinetic violence (while the Swedish version certainly has its gruesome moments, they're eerily staid and quiet), but at least that kid looks astonishingly similar to the creepy-featured boy in the original and the light seems right. I still don't know why they had to go and make this into an American movie, but this looks — again, judging from less than 90 second of sounds and images — not as bad as it could have been. And I love the casting of Richard Jenkins as the father. He has that weary, kind face that will just make it so scary when he... Well, go watch the Swedish version if you haven't already. Shiver.
