Black People (Will and Jada!) Are Headed to Broadway
The New York Post's resident theater crone Michael Riedel writes today about "the Denzel effect," suggesting that since Mr. Washington won a Tony back in June, many Hollywood actors, especially black ones, have become interested in working on stage.
Looks to be true! Not only are Samuel L. Jackson and Halle Berry planning on starring in The Mountaintop, about Martin Luther King, but there are rumors afoot that power couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are considering a Broadway run in a revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. Jada would play Stella and Will would play Mitch. Ha, just kidding. Obviously he'd play Stanley. Which leaves the obvious, enormous question of who would play Blanche. If they're doing an all-black Tennessee Williams thing, like they did with Cat On a Hot Tin Roof recently, may we suggest Taraji P. Henson? Khandi Alexander is probably too old, right? Or, you know, what about a black actress who works regularly in the theater. You could age down Adriane Lenox a bit perhaps? Maybe Deidre Goodwin's got it in her? Just please, please, please anyone but Kerry Washington. Anyone but her! Raven-Symoné, fine! Kerry Washington, noooo.
