We love any news story that includes "mummified skeletal remains." So this story about Tokyo's oldest man is a real treat. Turns out that he's been dead for 30 years, during which time he became a mummy.

According to the BBC:

He was thought to be the oldest man in Tokyo - but when officials went to congratulate Sogen Kato on his 111th birthday, they uncovered mummified skeletal remains lying in his bed.

Mr Kato may have been dead for 30 years according to Japanese authorities.

Apparently this was some sort of real-life Weekend at Bernie's situation: The family was pretending Kato was alive so as to collect over $100,000 in pension payments.
A Tokyo metropolitan welfare official told the BBC "It's so eerie." Which is probably in line for understatement of the century. This guy was a mummy!
