Bugs and Daffy Come Out of the Woods for Looney Tunes Update
Coming this fall to a Cartoon Network near you, The Looney Tunes Show! Yes, brand new episodes of our favorite nature dwellers in 'toon form will grace the small screen once again with famous voice actor, Jeff Bergman, taking on Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck for the first time in nearly a decade.
According to Wikipedia, one of the few sources out there with concrete information on the show, this update will revolve around Bugs and Daffy who have left the woods in favor of a life in the suburbs. Their "colorful neighbors" will include Sylvester, Tweety, Granny and Yosemite Sam. The show will also include CG shorts of Wile E. Coyote's ongoing quest to blow the crap out of Road Runner, and music videos with the Looney Tunes singing original material.
The network placement of this show got the imagination whirling. Cartoon Network usually spends its day playing child-safe programming before 10pm eastern strikes, giving way to the adult-oriented shows of Adult Swim. This space is usually reserved for failed cartoon shows looking for their inevitable comeback (see Family Guy and Futurama) and will soon welcome Rob Corddry's Childrens Hospital. Although it cannot be understated how excited I am to witness the rebirth of Daffy Duck (Bugs can go fly a kite), I can't help but wonder what if this upcoming rendition of the Looney Tunes dabbled with Adult Swim.
Imagine, if you will, Daffy Duck finally giving Bugs Bunny both the ass-kicking and cursing tirade he so richly deserves. Think of Elmer Fudd's elation at finally "bwasting" Bugs between the ears, or Sylvester's satisfaction as Tweety makes his way through Sylvester's lower intestine. Sure, the casualty count would be much higher than your typical "Merrie Melodies" joint, but like any other cartoon show, the "everything's back to normal!" ending would suffice.
Hell, the show's premise alone lends itself to adult-oriented episodes. Bugs and Daffy left the woods for the suburbs? Not too many college buddies, rooming together in the city make the plunge for the suburbs together. Now I'm not suggesting Bugs and Daffy have something more going on, although leaving the woods would be an obvious closet analogy, but it could be something to explore. Bugs hasn't, after all, shied away from dressing in drag. The Looney Tunes are actually a bunch of kinky bastards, come to think of it. Except for Foghorn Leghorn. That rooster simply emanates testosterone in its purest form.
Obviously an adult-oriented Looney Tunes show is about as far fetched as a Family Guy remake for Nickelodeon (Peter to Meg: "I love you, daughter."), so I won't get my hopes up. Like I said before, a traditional Looney Tunes reboot is a welcomed treat in of itself. I just hope they let Daffy jack Bugs in the face just once before all that stress he's holding in gives him an aneurism.
