The New York Times has created a nifty little online toy that allows you to create a plan to reduce the U.S. budget deficit, and see how much money it'll actually save. So, what's the secret?

Well, we spent about 20 seconds plugging in the most basic debt-reducing ideas from liberals—getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan, returning taxes to Clinton-era levels—and found that we'd solved the deficit problem. Good for us! Too bad none of those great, common-sense ideas like "stop spending so much goddamn money on useless wars" and "make rich people pay as much in taxes as they were in the mid-1990s" are politically feasible. Guess the government will just have to stick with clipping coupons for now.
