Senator Reveals All!
[There was a video here]
Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet was caught bitching to a colleague today about his party's lame duck strategy on the Senate floor today, thanks to a friendly hot mic. His complaint? "It's all rigged." Perhaps you might agree!
Bennet, who just won re-election in Colorado, was complaining to fellow Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar during a vote today about how little preparation and care went into the Senate Democrats' strategy for the lame duck session (which is now essentially "sit around while Republicans continue beating you"):
Bennet was speaking to a colleague who appeared to be and sounded like Minnesota's Amy Klobuchar when Bennet said of this lame duck session, "It's all rigged. The whole conversation is rigged. The fact that we don't get to a discussion before the break about what we're going to do in the lame duck. It's just rigged."
When contacted for a comment on the hot mic, Bennet's staff responded, "Michael was telling the same truths on the Senate floor that he tells folks back home in Colorado."
While the choice of "rigged" will make for colorful interpretations Internet-wide, we're glad that Bennet stopped by that hot mic long enough to acknowledge this: "We don't get to a discussion before the break about what we're going to do in the lame duck."
Exactly! Why do Democrats come guns-blazing into a legislative session with soaring rhetoric about middle-class-only tax cuts, repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," passing the DREAM Act, etc., without preparing a solid plan for how they'll get these things through the Senate? Maybe a simple headcount on various issues before the legislative session begins would help, so then the whole plan, which your base is starting to get excited about, wouldn't start crumbling vote-by-vote within five seconds of the opening gavel.
