Dumbest Congress Member Wants Guns on the House Floor
We should thank delightful Rep. Louie Gohmert, in a way, for bringing this post-Tucson spree of hastily conceived legislative proposals to its natural conclusion: He's drafting a bill that allows members of Congress to carry guns on the House floor.
Maybe he's doing this just to get a rise out of the hippies — the surest way to consolidate support in his Texas district.
But even the NRA could look at this and think, "Yeah... maybe not?" Behold:
Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert says his office is drafting a measure to allow members of Congress to carry guns in the District of Columbia, including in the Capitol and on the House floor.
Gohmert says he and his colleagues need to be able to protect themselves, in light of the mass shooting in Arizona.
"It'd be a good thing for members of Congress who want to carry a weapon in the District," he said. "I know friends that walk home from the Capitol. There's no security for us," he said, adding that the measure would deter people from attacking members. "There is some protection in having protection."
If he wanted to talk about members of Congress being allowed to carry in the District of Columbia while they're walking around, he might be able to find a debate. But wouldn't they need to be stored with security while checking into the building, at least? It would be hard to imagine him getting support from any other members of Congress on that provision, since they'd all worry about dumb Louie Gohmert accidentally shooting them.
