Underwear Bomber Chose Detroit Flight Because It Was Cheap
Poor Detroit. People leave bombs there, and no one wants to live there any more or, apparently, even travel there. That's why suspected underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab picked a Detroit flight for his failed 2009 Christmas flaming underwear bomb attempt over other American cities, the AP has discovered:
Abdulmutallab considered Houston, where he attended an Islamic conference in 2008, current and former counterterrorism officials told the AP. Another person with knowledge of the case said Abdulmutallab also considered Chicago but was discouraged by the cost.
So he chose poor, dilapidated Detroit instead. That place just can't catch a break.
