Selling Lady Gaga's new album Born This Way for 99 cents not only crashed Amazon's servers, but also cost them about $3 million. Was it worth it?

The deal was so that the online retailer could introduce users to its Cloud Drive service, which stores people's music on remote servers. The New York Times points out that Amazon still paid wholesale for each digital copy of the album, about $8 to $9. New York crunched the numbers on the 440,000 copies that Amazon sold to get the $3 million figure.

Is Lady Gaga is driving everyone into bankruptcy these days, not just herself? Or was the stunt worth it considering all the press Amazon got?
