You know how no one has a job or money and everything's going to shit and you feel like a rat in a cage and the streets are erupting into a cauldron of rage and torn flesh? It's all in your head. According to the feds, violent crime was down 12% last year.

Why? No one knows. But the long-term trend of dropping violent crime seems unstoppable: Between 1993 and 2010, the rate fell by 70%, according to the newly released National Crime Victimization Survey. Has it really come to this? Are we so consumed by our video games and iPhones and Twitters that we can't even muster the common hostility to punch and kick and gouge one another in the face anymore?
