Facebook Is Building an Arctic Swedish Base
Facebook just announced plans to build a giant data center 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Of course. Any evil, world-dominating corporation worth its salt must have an Arctic Doom Base.
According to the AP, the data center will be located in the city of Lulea. It will be 300,000-square feet, and cost an estimated $750 million. Apparently Facebook picked Lulea as the site of its first non-U.S. data center in part because its cool temperatures will mean less power usage. It's been getting a lot of criticism from Greenpeace and other environmental groups over its use of coal-generated electricity to power all your FarmVille.
Sweden! The deep, billowing snow drifts should be the perfect place to store all the DNA samples Facebook will probably soon begin collecting on all its users.
