America’s Giant Kids Demand Giant New School Desks
It's a great time to sell regular-sized furniture and label it "kid-sized," according to a recent CNN.com report.
A story posted Wednesday cites numerous manufacturers of school furniture who confess to increasing the size of chairs and desks to accommodate the new generation's larger students.
Tom Brennan, president of school furniture supplier School Outfitters, emphasized the discrepancy between American children and their international counterparts by revealing the uniquely American need for specially-made super-sized seats:
"For perspective, when we look at import product from China, you can tell the difference from the China market and the U.S. market. The [seat] buckets are generally not wide enough. They have to be designed specifically for the U.S."
According to the article, other items too small for America's children include: clothing, car safety seats, and standard pediatric growth charts.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that one in three American children is obese or overweight.
