Lifetime officially confirmed today that troubled actress Lindsay Lohan has been tapped to play the late legend Elizabeth Taylor in the upcoming made-for-TV-movie Liz & Dick.

According to a press release, the Lifetime Original biopic is "based on the true story of the screen icon's historic romance with actor Richard Burton." The screenplay was penned by Temple Grandin writer Christopher Monger.

Just last week, rumors were swirling that the months-long negotiations between Lohan and Lifetime had fallen apart amid reports of the hard-partying starlet's return to non-fictional drama.

But Lifetime denied the hearsay, and confirmed Lindsay's portrayal of Liz this morning.

"We are thrilled Lindsay will portray beloved Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor," said Lifetime's Executive VP Rob Sharenow. "She is one of the rare actresses who possesses the talent, beauty and intrigue to capture the spirit of such a provocative icon."

I don't know about talent, beauty, and intrigue, but comparable tabloid fodder — no doubt.
