Alex Pettyfer Is Ready for the Magic Mike Musical — Are You?
Too-good-to-be-true male stripper flick Magic Mike isn't even in theaters yet, and its screenwriter is already adapting it into a musical. Seriously.
Writer-producer Reid Carolin told USA Today about his plans, noting that the theatrical version of the film would be less serious.
We are working on it as a Broadway show, which would be a different story, more of a romp, more of a fun night out at a club with a story.
Magic Mike the movie isn't exactly a serious drama, but it does deal with issues like aging and drug abuse. And who wants to see that on stage?
Carolin said he wanted to give screaming women the chance to be part of the show. Yes, screaming women. Because there's no chance at all a male stripper musical on Broadway would attract an overwhelmingly gay male audience, right? Perhaps, as is the case with Magic Mike the movie, we're supposed to pretend this is just for straight ladies.
Star Alex Pettyfer is apparently on board. (Can he sing? Does it matter?) He said he'd love to participate in a Magic Mike musical, reprising his role in the film and baring his ass on stage. In fact, he'd like to get the entire cast in on it — at least for a one-night only performance. Yeah, I can't imagine Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Matthew McConaughey, and Matt Bomer would say no to that. (Wishful thinking.)
True Broadway aficionados will know that this would be the second male stripper musical based on a film. The first was The Full Monty — although that show (like the movie it was based on) focused on normal guys taking it all off. Magic Mike has a lot more six packs and, uh, standing ovations.
