Here's a Photo of Dark Knight Shooting Suspect James Holmes
Authorities have identified 24-year-old James Holmes as the man who entered a Colorado movie theater early Friday morning and opened fire on a crowded screening of The Dark Knight. That's him above, in a photo from CU, where he was a student.
Aurora police apparently have Holmes in custody. His apartment is said be "booby-trapped" with explosives. Inside, according to anonymous source, police found "buckets of ammunition." "We could be here for hours or we could be here for days," Police Chief Dan Oates told KOAA. Below, two photos of the scene around Holmes' apartment from Redditor quepasacontigo.
Holmes went to high school in San Diego, where his family still lives; he was studying for a PhD in neuroscience at the University of Colorado Denver but withdrew last month. His only interaction with the police until today was a speeding ticket.
An ABC News reporter appears to have been the person that informed Holmes' mother:
The woman, contacted at her home in San Diego, spoke briefly with ABC News and immediately expressed concern her son may be involved in the shooting death of at least 12 people overnight.
"You have the right person," she said, apparently speaking on gut instinct. "I need to call the police... I need to fly out to Colorado."
The family later released a statement:
Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved. We ask that the media respect our privacy during this difficult time. Our family is cooperating with authorities in both San Diego, California and Aurora, Colorado. We are still trying to process this information and we appreciate that people will respect our privacy.
