Former Teacher Describes James Holmes As Brilliant, Neighbors Say He Was A Shy Polite Loner
Dark Knight shooting suspect James Holmes graduated in 2010 with honors from the University of California, Riverside, where he majored in neuroscience. University Chancellor Tim White remembers Holmes as a brilliant student.
"He was an honor student, so academically he was at the top of the top. He really distinguished himself from an academic point of view during his four years with us, graduating with highest honors."
CBS reports that Holmes won an internship in neurobiology at the Salk Institute while still at Westview High School in San Diego, where, according to the Associated Press, he also ran cross country and played soccer.
One neighbor, Tom Mai, described Holmes as quiet and polite. "He seemed to be a very nice, young, typical American boy," Mai said.
However, Mai's 16-year old son, Anthony, has a different recollection of Holmes.
"Like, as much as he was always smiling all the time that I was around, the fact that he was quiet, you know, something just looked kind of weird. It was just a feeling in my gut that I had that something was going on, but I wasn't sure."
The younger Mai also noted that the only job Holmes could get after graduating college was at McDonald's.
