Up-and-coming stand-up comedian Caleb Medley was out on date with his pregnant wife Katie to celebrate their impending parenthood when a gunman burst into the Aurora movie theater where the two were sat and shot Caleb along with 70 others.

Katie managed to escape unhurt, but Caleb suffered brain damage and lost his right eye. He remains under an induced coma in critical condition at University of Colorado Denver Hospital, though is reportedly showing signs of progress.

Sadly, Caleb's suffering extends beyond physical pain.

The 23-year-old is uninsured, and, according to his family, faces medical expenses that could surmount $2 million. Caleb's friend Michael West launched a website to help raise funds to cover his healthcare costs. Over $70,000 have been donated so far.

In the midst of heartache, some good news: Yesterday morning, Katie gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Hugo Jackson Medley.

West mentioned to CBS News how excited Caleb was to become a father. "He needs to get better because he needs to be a dad," he said.
