College Station Shooting Scene Caught on Camera
Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann and another man were shot and killed yesterday in College Station, Texas, by a gunman identified as 35-year-old Thomas Alton Caffall.
Caffall was shot several times by officers and rushed to the hospital, but was later pronounced dead.
Police confirmed reports that Caffall opened fire on Bachmann as the law enforcement officer was preparing to serve Caffall with an eviction notice.
During an ensuing shootout with police, an additional officer and two civilians sustained gunshot wounds. One of the civilians, identified as Caffall's landlord Chris Northcliff, later died of his injuries.
Despite a warning to residents to stay away from the area, Caffall's Fidelity Street neighbor Rigo Cisneros, a 40-year-old former army medic, remained on his porch, capturing footage of the scene with his cellphone (see below) and waiting for paramedics to arrive.
Police eventually allowed Cisneros to perform CPR on Constable Bachmann, but it was too late. "There were no vital signs on the constable when I got there," he told The Eagle. "He took one clear gunshot wound to the chest."
Cisneros moved on to try and tend to Caffall wounds, and managed to have a brief conversation with him. "I was asking him questions, like if he knew he was allergic to anything," Cisneros told the paper. "He looked up at me and asked me to apologize to the officer that was shot."
Caffall's stepfather, Richard Weaver, also spoke with the media, telling local CBS affiliate KHOU that his stepson was unemployed and refused to find a new job after quitting his old one, preferring to spend his time playing video games indoors. Weaver also recalled expressing concern that Caffall was a threat to family members.
On Caffall's Facebook page, several photos of weapons are on display, including one of a vz. 58 assault rifle he purchased last year.
