Today's Song: Wish 'Used to Love You'
Here are '90s R&B songs directly referenced to '90s R&B that I noticed in the first single from Wish's newly released free mixtape, Me Against Her, "Used to Love You":
- Faith Evans' "You Used to Love Me"
- Mary J. Blige's "Love No Limit"
- Gina Thompson's "The Things You Do"
- Aaliyah's "At Your Best You Are Love" (this is by way of the Isley Brothers' '70s original)
Additionally, she references Ashanti's "Foolish" and the song seems to replicate the beat (especially the fills) of T La Rock's "Back to Burn."
This is basically a nostalgia collage. I love that the melodic support to her voice is sparse and mostly via more, harmonizing, back-up vocals. Wish's mixtape is fantastic, but she really won me over with the location she lists on her Twitter: "right on top of that ROSE." I'm a sucker for a Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead reference, especially that one. This woman mainlines into my 90stalgia pleasure receptors.
