Texas Prisons Are Overflowing With Prostitutes
Texas is spending way too much money on its prostitutes, and its not even getting any sexual favors in return.
There are currently over 350 prostitutes in state prisons, costing Texas much more than it should.
Texas state law allows prostitutes to be charged with a felony and sent to jail after three misdemeanor convictions. But while that gets these women off the streets, it does little to help them, and it ends up costing the taxpayer more in the longrun.
It costs at least $15,000 per year to house one convict, while rehabilitation programs are about $4,300 a year. The math seems simple enough.
Democratic Senator John Whitmore is one of the politicians advocating a change of law, calling the number of prostitutes in prison "nuts."
And just think how many of those poor jailbirds have Pretty Woman-esque hearts of gold.
