Ohio's GOP Governor Says Being the Wife of an Elected Official is Hard Because of All the Laundry
Speaking at a Mitt Romney rally in Owensville, Ohio, yesterday, the state's Republican governor John Kasich took the time to acknowledge the wives of politicians and all the loads of laundry they're currently at home doing.
"You know, Jane Portman, Karen Kasich, and Janna Ryan, they operate an awful lot of the time in the shadows," Kasich said, referring to his wife and the wives of Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) and VP nominee Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI). "It's not easy to be a spouse of an elected official. You know, they're at home, doing the laundry and doing so many things while we're up here on the stage getting applause, right? They don't often share in it."
Sadly, he continued:
And it is hard for the spouse to hear the criticism and to put up with the travel schedule and to have to be at home taking care of the kids. And where is the politician? Out on the road.
Ohio-based political blog Plunderbund notes that Gov. John "Man of the House" Kasich isn't just a sexist in theory — he also puts his discrimination into practice by paying his male staffers significantly more than his female staffers.
While that may be all well and good for Kasich (not so much for his female staffers, however), it's something of a nuisance for Romney, who is 52% unfavorable among Ohio women, and is currently trailing Obama in the swing state by five percent.
