'Common Sense' Supermarket Chain Sells Pre-Peeled Bananas Wrapped in Plastic
Austria-based, German-owned supermarket chain Billa, known for advertising itself as the "common sense" grocery shopping destination, has sparked an online uproar over its sale of plastic-sealed trays containing pre-peeled bananas.
"If there is an easy-to-open ready packed food it's the banana," as Greenpeace Austria spokesperson told the Austrian press. "Peeling it only to pack it in environmentally unfriendly plastic is just madness."
Billa's customers agreed, flooding its Facebook page — since disabled — with angry comments and boycott threats, prompting the company to issue an apology. A Billa rep called the product a "one off" mistake that will never happen again.
