The first Massachusetts resident in over a year to win the Mega Millions jackpot had another reason to smile: His girlfriend had just broken up with him.

22-year-old Sandeep "Sunny" Singh of Hyannis, who helps his mother pay the bills by working two jobs, says he was running late to one of those jobs, so asked his sister to pick him up a few quick-pick lottery tickets.

One of those tickets had all the winning numbers including the Mega Ball, netting Singh half of a $61 million jackpot.

Speaking with reporters yesterday at the Mass Lottery headquarters, Singh was asked if he had a "lucky girlfriend." "No lucky girlfriend, just broke up with her," Singh said, adding "thank God."

Clarifying, Singh noted that his girlfriend broke up with him, "but right now, I'm not really worried about it. I was heartbroken at first, but now I'm getting over it."

Singh said he has no immediate plans for the windfall, but hopes it will change his life "for the better."
