Gloria Allred's 'October Surprise': Mitt Romney Lied Under Oath to Help Staples Founder Keep Money From Wife in Divorce?
RadarOnline broke the news yesterday that attention-happy attorney Gloria Allred was on her way to Boston for a court hearing aimed at unsealing sworn testimony given by Romney that could potentially harm his campaign.
Allred was joined by the Boston Globe and Maureen Stemberg Sullivan, ex-wife of Staples founder and Romney pal Tom Stemberg, in her quest to remove the gag order preventing the testimony from being released.
Much speculation over what sort of embarrassing tidbits could be uncovered in a "decades-old divorce case," which Romney's lawyer Robert Jones claims his client "has no objection to letting the public see."
Today, TMZ revealed what it believes is Allred's big "October Surprise": Romney allegedly lied under oath about the value of Staples to prevent Stemberg's wife from walking away with her fair share.
According to TMZ's sources, Romney told the court that Staples — a company Bain Capital had invested in early on — was "overvalued," and referred to Stemberg as a "dreamer."
From TMZ:
Partly as a result of Romney's testimony, Maureen got relatively little in the divorce, but we're told just weeks after the divorce ended, Romney and Tom went to Goldman Sachs and cashed in THEIR stock for a fortune. Short story — Romney allegedly lied to help his friend and screw the friend's wife over.
It remains to be seen what sort of impact this revelation will have on Romney's election chances, considering Romney's claim that 47% of the country is addicted to handouts like food and shelter didn't seem to hurt him at all.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump is still on track to reveal his own "October Surprise" around noon today. A short while ago he tweeted that all predictions about his surprise are "totally incorrect."
