Forget Everything Else: Colorado Has Just Become the First State to Legalize Marijuana (UPDATE: Washington Follows Suit)
Toke 'em if you've got 'em: Mile High City NBC affiliate 9News has just announced that Colorado will pass Amendment 64, legalizing the recreational use and commercial sale of marijuana (up to 1 ounce) to residents over the age of 21.
In addition, green-thumbed Coloradans will be allowed to grow up to six marijuana plants in their own homes.
The amendment further requires that the first $40 million in revenue raised annually by the newly taxed substance "be credited to the public school capital construction assistance fund."
Colorado could be the first of three states to legalize marijuana, with similar initiatives on the ballot in Oregon and Washington. Massachusetts, where marijuana use had already been decriminalized, passed Question 3 earlier tonight legalizing medical marijuana in the state.
UPDATE: Voters in Washington have similarly approved an initiative that legalizes the recreational use of up to one ounce of marijuana. The new law is set to take effect on December 6th.
Unkind news for potheads in Oregon, where a marijuana legalization measure has apparently failed.
