Bipolar scion Jesse Jackson, Jr., who stood for re-election to his seat in the House of Representatives two weeks ago despite having spent virtually the entire campaign in hiding or under treatment for manic depression, has finally stepped down.

Jackson basically disappeared last summer, followed by revelations that he was under investigation for campaign spending violations and had sought psychiatric treatment at the Mayo Clinic. He never issued any statements to his constituents or revealed more than the barest of details about his condition or whereabouts. He was spotted, as we reported last month, drinking with various women at a Washington, D.C, bar. According to Chicago's CBS affiliate, his behavior attracted "scrutiny [of] improper, irrational spending and risky sexual misconduct."

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is expected to schedule a special election to replace him.
