Facebook Deletes Photo of Woman Whose Elbow Kinda Looks Like a Boob [UPDATE]
Incensed by Facebook's increasingly arbitrary terms of service and move to act by recent controversies involving breastfeeding photos, Theories of the Deep Understanding of Things (NSFW link) decided to see exactly what constitutes "indecent material" on Facebook these days.
The audio-visual web magazine posted an intentionally misleading photo on its Facebook page of a bathing woman who appears to be flashing her buxom left breast, areolas and all.
Except, upon closer inspection, it becomes immediately clear that the exposed area is actually an innocent elbow.
But to Facebook moderators it was one and the same: Within 24 hours, the photo was removed. An email sent to Theories of the Deep Understanding of Things revealed the ostensible reason — the photo violated the site's infamous Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.
"FB moderators can't tell an elbow from a dangerous, filthy, uncanny and violent female breast," the magazine wrote in a follow up post. "No questions were asked and the post is down. Imagine our surprise."
In fairness to Facebook, if adolescence has taught us anything, it's that anything that looks like a boob makes a viable substitution.
UPDATE: A Facebook rep has just emailed Gawker the following statement: "Just wanted to reach out and let you know that we have restored the photo. We made a mistake and sent an apology to the original poster."
