'Men Interested in Men in Tehran' and Other Dangerous, Possible Facebook Graph Searches
"Want to start a book club or find a gym buddy? Connect with friends who like the same activities — and meet new people, too," Facebook's brand-new, would-be revolutionary Graph Search promises. Of course, you can also find out which Muslims in Tehran are interested in men, and which Chinese citizens have relatives interested in Falun Gong. Or which married people like prostitutes!
All of these are possible real searches — that could be used by, say, a repressive state apparatus — collected for "Actual Facebook Graph Searches," a new Tumblr by Tom Scott. "I've been having a lot of fun at Facebook's expense lately, but I had to take one more quick, cheap shot," he writes in the site's FAQ, "and I think a Tumblr blog is the quickest, cheapest shot it's possible to take."
If this is freaking you out, Gizmodo has a guide to changing your privacy settings. Scott's advice? "If it'd be awkward if it was put on a screen in Times Square, don't put it on Facebook. Oh, and check your privacy settings again."
