Country Star and Former Roger Clemens Mistress Mindy McCready Reportedly Commits Suicide (UPDATE)
Country singer Mindy McCready committed suicide Sunday afternoon, according to a report from NBC's Andrea Canning. McCready's life and career has been in steady decline since her debut 1996 album, Ten Thousand Angels, which sold over 2 million copies. Since then, she's battled with substance and mental health issues, including several overdoses and arrests. Her 2013 had been especially turbulent; in early Feburary, she entered a rehab program, just three weeks after David Wilson, McCready's boyfriend and the father of her nine-month-old son, reportedly killed himself.
Her problems with alcohol, drugs, and mental health go far beyond the past two months, however. She was convicted of prescription medication fraud in 2004, a DUI in 2005, and was charged with battery and resisting arrest in 2007. She's attempted suicide at least four times before, including once when she was pregnant in 2005 and, most recently, in 2010.
McCready also gained notoriety in 2008 when it was reported she'd had a decade long affair with former Yankees star Roger Clemens, a relationship that reportedly started when McCready was just 15-years-old.
McCready, who was 37, had two children, six-year-old Zander and 10-month-old Zayne.
UPDATE: McCready's brother confirmed her death to the Daily News.
UPDATE 2: The Cleburne Sheriff's Office released a statement saying McCready died of "what appears to be a single self-inflicted gunshot wound" in her home in Heber Springs, Arkansas.
And Dr. Drew, who "treated" McCready on his show Celebrity Rehab in 2010, told CNN McCready was "a lovely woman, we have lost her and it didn't have to go down like this." As Buzzfeed notes, McCready is the fifth Celebrity Rehab cast member to die in the past two years.
