A French man depressed after the end of a relationship is headed to prison after admitting he called and texted his ex-girlfriend 21,807 times in a 10-month period, AFP reports.

The 33-year-old harasser will pay a $1,300 fine and serve 4 months of a 10-month sentence. He's also been ordered into mandatory psychiatric treatment, and, obviously, banned from further contact with his ex.

He said the persistent calls to the victim, a 32-year-old teacher, were an effort to get what he considered fair payment for the work he had done to fix up their apartment during the time they were together.

"At the time, my logic was that until she returns the money … or at least says thank you, I would not stop the calls," he told the court. "I tell myself, with hindsight, that it was stupid."

Although he appears to have learned his lesson, he also got what he wanted—and more than he deserved—from his ex, who said "thank you" during a mediation session. At that point, he finally broke off communication for good.
